Alexis Gaskin and the 10th ranked Women's Basketball team open conference play at home on Friday.

Off to its best start in school history, the undefeated (5-0) Women’s Basketball team will test CCAA competition for the first time when Cal State Stanislaus (Friday) and Chico State (Saturday) come to RIMAC Arena this weekend...Stanislaus is currently 1-3 while Chico State, runner-up to UCSD in last year’s conference race and tabbed for second in the CCAA’s pre-season coaches’ poll, is a perfect 4-0...UCSD was ranked third and Stanislaus 10th by the league coaches.

First-year Head Coach Charity Elliott’s team kept its record clean with a pair of wins at the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix over Thanksgiving weekend...Friday afternoon, junior Michelle Osier’s double double (16 points and 13 rebounds) propelled UCSD to a 61-42 victory over Western New Mexico...The Mustangs led early, but a late first half surge had the No. 10 Tritons on top by 10 at intermission and WNMU never got any closer... UCSD shot just 38.7% from the field but held Western to a paltry 3l.5% and the Mustangs missed all 12 of their three-point tries...Senior Meaghan Noud connected on four treys for 12 points and Kaycie Bull came off the bench to add 10.

Senior post Alexis Gaskin had a mammoth game Saturday, scoring a career high 26 points and pulling down 13 boards as the Tritons dumped Fort Lewis (CO), 76-64...Gaskin’s first field goal tied the game at the 17:24 mark of the first half and the Skyhawks were never able to regain the lead...UCSD shot 47.3% in this one as Noud had a 19-point effort, Osier chipped in with 12 and point guard Marla Mason dished out five assists.

Coach Chris Carlson’s Men’s Basketball team will be looking to find the win column when it opens CCAA play at home this weekend against Cal State Stanislaus (Friday) and Chico State (Saturday)...The Tritons, picked for seventh in the league’s pre-season coaches’ poll, are 0-2 after absorbing a road loss at Grand Canyon Saturday night... Stanislaus (1-3) and Chico State (2-2) were selected to placed eighth and ninth respectively in the CCAA race.

A 21-7 run in the last nine minutes of the first half elevated Grand Canyon to a 12-point halftime lead and ultimately a 72-62 triumph over UCSD in Phoenix...Down as much as 17 in the second half, the Tritons cut the margin to six on senior Andrew Hatch’s trifecta with 1:13 to go, but some sharp shooting from the free throw line iced it for the Antelopes...Hatch finished with a team high 12 markers, all coming via three-pointers, sophomore Jordan Lawley pitched in with 11 and senior guard Clint Allard added 10, plus five rebounds and eight assists...GCU outshot UCSD from the floor and was over 50% from three-point land.

Junior volleyball standout Rebecca Bailey was named to the NCAA All-Pacific Region team last week...The talented Bailey pounded 424 kills, the second best single season total in school history, for a Triton team that finished second in the CCAA before being knocked out of the NCAA Playoffs in the second round of regional play.

All home conference basketball games for both the UCSD men’s and women’s teams will be broadcast live on the internet, starting with Friday’s contests against Cal State Stanislaus...Ted Mendenhall will again handle play-by-play duties...Check the UCSD Athletic website for further information and log-on instructions.

The annual UCSD Athletic Department Blood Drive is slated for Wednesday, Jan. 9 from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM in the RIMAC Arena lobby...To schedule a time to donate, call (858) 534-8460.
