THIS WEEK’S EVENTS: Thu., Dec. 6---Men’s Basketball---UCSD vs. Alaska-Fairbanks---7:00 PM |
MEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS CCAA 2-0; ALASKA-FAIRBANKS IN THURSDAY Coach
Chris Carlson’s Men’s Basketball team, now riding a two-game win
streak, hosts Division II rival Alaska-Fairbanks in a non-conference
tilt, Thursday night at RIMAC Arena...The Tritons come in 2-2 overall
and unbeaten in CCAA play after two games...Alaska-Fairbanks brings a
3-3 mark to La Jolla, one of the wins coming against Division I Oregon
State of the Pac-10. |
In similar fashion, the Tritons made it two-in-a-row
Saturday night, racing out to a 17-point halftime edge and then
repelling a late Chico State rally for a 65-55 victory...Sophomore
Jordan Lawley knocked down a trio of three-pointers en route to a game
high 17 for UCSD...Andrew Browning (10 pts.) had his first double digit
game and junior Shane Poppen grabbed nine rebounds, helping UC to again
finish plus-eight on the glass.
Carlson got his first collegiate coaching victory
Friday night, a well-earned, 63-60, decision over Cal State
Stanislaus...Senior Clint Allard nailed a three-pointer on the first
possession and although they never trailed and twice extended the
margin to 13 points in the second half, the Tritons were never able to
put the Warriors away...Stanislaus got to within two points with 6:47
remaining in the game and it was nip-and-tuck the rest of the
way...Allard, Henry Patterson, Darryl Lawlor and Kelvin Kim all made
clutch plays down the stretch to secure the victory...Allard finished
with a double double (14 pts./10 rebounds), leading UCSD in both
categories, plus five assists...Kim also scored 14, including three key
free throws in the final 17 seconds...Patterson ended up with 11 points
and eight caroms...UCSD outshot Stanislaus (45.8% to 39.1%) and had
eight more rebounds.

TRITON WOMEN TOPPLE NO. 8 CHICO STATE; KEEP RECORD PERFECT
Now
7-0 after sweeping its first two conference games at home last weekend,
Coach Charity Elliott’s fourth-ranked Women’s Basketball team will be
idle until Dec. 16 when it hosts Grand Canyon at RIMAC Arena...The
seven consecutive wins to open the season is the best start in the
history of the program.
The Tritons used balanced scoring and hard-nosed
defense to rout visiting Cal State Stanislaus, 77-58, Friday
night...Senior Meaghan Noud dropped 14 points on the Warriors and
junior Michelle Osier tallied 13 to go with six rebounds and four of
UCSD’s 17 steals...Inside force Alexis Gaskin had 12 points while
Alexis Mezzetta and Diahan Futalan contributed nine and eight
respectively...Mezzetta also had a team high four assists and Futalan
matched Osier’s six boards... Defense was the real story, however, as
UCSD held Stanislaus to just 33.3% shooting from the floor and forced
33 turnovers...The Tritons bolted to a 26-4 advantage from the opening
tip and led by as many as 27 late in the game.
Saturday night, the Tritons got their first major
conference test of the season and passed with flying colors, turning
aside No. 8 Chico State, 60-46...Osier canned 8-of-13 from the field,
racking up 19 points and seven rebounds to lead UCSD...Gaskins had
eight points and eight rebounds and sophomore Erin Noonan collected
nine points, five boards and three assists...The defense again carried
the day, harassing the Wildcats into 30.2% shooting from the floor and
18 turnovers...The Tritons raced out to an early 11-point lead but
Chico rallied to tie it at halftime...It was still tied with 10:08
remaining when an Osier lay-up put UCSD on top for good and Elliott’s
charges gradually pulled away.
