MEN’S BASKETBALL LOOKS FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE VICTORY
Coach Chris Carlson’s Men’s Basketball team inched over .500 (3-2) for the first time this season and now takes a three-game win streak into Sunday afternoon’s home contest against visiting William Jewell (MO).
Outscoring its opponent by 17 in the second half, UCSD overcame a six-point halftime deficit to defeat Division II Alaska-Fairanks, 69-58, Thursday night...A pair of late treys put the Nanooks up, 30-24, at the break and they quickly extended the margin to 11 at the star of the second half...But the Tritons chipped away and took the lead for good on a Shane Poppen lay-up (part of a 17-0 run) with eight minutes remaining...Senior guard Andrew Hatch, one of four Tritons in double figures, posted a team high 15 points...He was joined in the scoring parade by Kelvin Kim (13), Jordan Lawley (11) and Poppen (10)...Lawlor and Henry Patterson pulled down seven rebounds apiece and senior Clint Allard handed out nine assists...Defense was key down the stretch as UCSD forced Alaska-Fairbanks into 13 second half turnovers.
GRAND CANYON NEXT FOR UNDEFEATED WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Coach Charity Elliott’s fourth-ranked Women’s Basketball team tries to make it eight-in-a-row when it hosts D-II Grand Canyon Sunday afternoon at RIMAC Arena...The Tritons, 7-0, on the season, have been off since defeating No. 8 Chico State on Dec. 1.
UCSD’s balanced offense features three players—Michelle Osier (12.7 ppg), Meaghan Noud (12.7 ppg) and Alexis Gaskin (12.1 ppg)—all averaging just over 12 points per contest...Osier leads in rebounding with an 8.3 per game average and senior Alexis Mezzetta heads up the assist column with 21...The Tritons have out-shot their opponents, .403 to .346, in the first seven games.
On the recruiting front, Elliott signed guard Deziree (Daisy) Feder out of Santa Monica High School to a National Letter of Intent...It was her third signing.
