|MEN’S BASKETBALL NOW 4-2; HOSTS WAYNE STATE TUESDAY|
Coach Chris Carlson’s Men’s Basketball team will try to make it five wins in a row when it hosts Division II Wayne State (NE) Tuesday night at RIMAC Arena...The Tritons come in 4-2 after knocking off NAIA William Jewel, 70-51, Sunday afternoon...Wayne State is 6-4 on the season and plays NAIA Biola tonight in Los Angeles.
Darryl Lawlor fed Jordan Lawley for an uncontested lay-up 18 seconds into yesterday’s contest against William Jewel and the Tritons never trailed en route to an impressive victory over the Cardinals...UCSD pushed the lead as high as 17 in the first half and were 13 up at the break...William Jewel narrowed it to 10 immediately following intermission but a quick, 13-2, run gave the Tritons their biggest advantage, 49-28...The Cardinals made one more charge, inching to within nine with 5:31 remaining but could get no closer...Fifty percent shooting from the free throw line by UCSD kept the margin closer than it might have been...On the other hand, it was the Tritons’ red-hot shooting from the field (55.6% for the game) that was largely responsible for their triumph... Senior Henry Patterson led UCSD with 13 points, followed by Kelvin Kim with 12 and Clint Allard with 11...Allard also had eight assists and six rebounds...The Tritons won the rebounding battle, 34-25, with junior Shane Poppen snagging 11.
“PERFECT” WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TO PLAY AT LAS VEGAS TOURNEY
Showing absolutely no signs of rust after finishing final exams and going 14 days without a game, the third-ranked Women’s Basketball team blitzed visiting Grand Canyon, 74-48, Sunday, its most lopsided win of the season...The victory improved UCSD’s record to 8-0, the best start in school history...Coach Charity Elliott’s squad now travels to Las Vegas for the Great Western Shootout where it will face Central Washington (Tue.) and Western Washington (Wed.).
Using 61.1% shooting, the Tritons bolted to a 48-25 halftime lead over Grand Canyon yesterday and extended it to 38 before Elliott’s reserves took over in the later stages... Alexis Gaskin (18 pts.), Meaghan Noud (15) and Michelle Osier (13) were the offensive catalysts and that trio accounted for 39 points in the first half alone...Sophomore Erin Noonan was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor with three treys for 11 points and handed out seven assists...UCSD finished up hitting 55.9% for the afternoon...Osier had seven boards to top the Tritons on the glass.
