The UC San Diego men's and women's cross country squads each finished first in its season-opening meet Saturday morning at the UCSD cross country course. The Triton men held off Point Loma and San Diego Christian College while the women bested Point Loma, Cal State San Bernardino and San Diego Christian.
UCSD seniors Chris Beetley-Hagler (Davis, Calif.) and Mimi Hodgins (Malibu, Calif.) were the individual winners in their respective races and the men ran 4.0 miles while the women traversed a 2.5 mile course.
Hodgins paced the women's side with a time of 15:04.1, more than 24 seconds ahead of the next fastest finisher which was Tanya Zeferjahn of CSUSB. UCSD sophomore Amanda Burkhardt (Cameron Park, Calif.) cross the finish line in third place in a time of 15:43.5, followed by Nina Miller (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) and Emily McGregor (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) who rounded out the top-5 women.
Beetley-Hagler was the first of six UCSD men who crossed the finish line before any other team member was able to manage the course, clocking in at 22:32.1, just one-tenth of a second faster than Luke Sigmon (Sr., San Leandro, Calif.) and two-tenths faster than Carl Lostrom (Sr., Carmel, Calif.)
Dan Holligan (Jr., Nonthaburi, Thailand), freshman Gabe LaMothe (Carmel, Calif.) and Evan Tamura (So., Huntington Beach, Calif.) rounded out the top-6 on the men's side. Point Loma's Noe Castellon was the first non-UCSD runner to finish the race, coming in seventh place with his time of 23:22.4.
UCSD's cross country squads return to action on Saturday, September 10 at the UC Irvine Invitational that will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Huntington Beach, Calif.
