The Triton Cheerleaders are a co-ed game day squad. The number of males and females on the team varies from year to year. The cheerleaders show their support for Triton Athletics and showcase their routines at various athletic department and community events throughout the academic year.

Cheer, Dance, and Mascot appearances are available upon request with a MINIMUM of 3 weeks notice. Due to student time demands we cannot guarantee that each request will be fulfilled. Priority will be given to academic and athletic-related responsibilites.

All requests for appearances will be fulfilled at the discretion of the UC San Diego Intercollegiate Athletics Department. The department reserves the right to refuse any appearance that conflicts with the best interests of the University and its students.

For your requests please note the following:

  • The mascot must be provided a secure changing room at the event venue.
  • Team(s) must be provided food for appearances longer than 3 HOURS.
  • Team(s) are available to engage with your guests, take pictures, perform routines, and lead Triton cheers.
  • The team(s) will arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled performance (unless otherwise arranged).

Coaching Staff

Abrina Wheatfall, Head Coach
Abrina Wheatfall is an alumni of the University of Oregon where she was an Oregon Duck cheerleader. She choreographed dance routines for the Oregon cheerleaders for seven years. She has coached and choreographed for the Triton cheer squad for the past three seasons as an assistant coach. Abrina focuses on dance, promotional appearances and the overall administration of the spirit squad.

Deija James, Assistant Coach
Deija James is a sales representative, core staff and head instructor for Varsity Spirit. Deija has over 10 years of experience coaching cheerleaders and staff instructors for the Universal Cheerleading Association. She is the Head Cheer Coach at Carlsbad High School, and previously coached cheer at Mira Mesa High School for five seasons. Deija focuses on stunt and game day performances for the Tritons. She is USASF and AACCA rules/safety certified.

Michelle Critzer, Assistant Coach
Michelle Critzer is a proud alumni of UC San Diego. She currently works for Universal Cheerleaders Association. During the year, Michelle travels coast to coast and internationally as a Judge or instructor. She has a background in gymnastics, high school cheer, and competitive cheer at both a club team, as well as College. She is USASF and AACCA rules/safety certified.


We are looking for positive, enthusiastic, and committed students who will help create an energetic atmosphere on GAME DAY as well as university events. UC San Diego Cheer prides itself on teamwork and comradery. We are looking for team players and hard workers to continue growing the spirit program.

It is important to remember that collegiate cheerleading is a big commitment. Cheerleaders must attend all practices, conditioning sessions, assigned games and appearances. Keep in mind that winter quarter in particular is an extremely busy time due to basketball season. Please carefully consider your availability before trying out.

Full Team: Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
Assigned Games: M/W Volleyball, M/W Soccer, M/W Water Polo, Softball, Baseball

Attending our clinic is a great way to prepare for tryouts. Attendees will practice collegiate style dances, stunts and cheers. Clinics typically take place in spring and are open to all enrolled high school and collegiate students. There is a per person registration fee.

Tryouts typically take place in April or May and are open to current full-time UCSD students and admitted high school seniors and transfers. An audition fee is required to tryout. Please carefully read the tryout information on the registration site for expectations and details. Video submissions are accepted for spring tryouts. Only individuals who register online and submit all required forms will be permitted to tryout.
