LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego men’s and women’s cross country squads will travel to Bethlehem, Pa., this week for the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University on Saturday, October 1. The meet will be the first for the Tritons since the UC Irvine Invitational on September 10.
Mimi Hodgins leads the women’s team into the invitational this week having been the top finisher in both of the team’s races thus far this season. She crossed the finish line first overall at the team’s first meet, a four-way meet at home with Cal State San Bernardino, San Diego Christian and Point Loma. Her time of 15:04.1 was more than 24 seconds faster than the next closest competitor. At the UC Irvine Invitational two weeks later, Hodgins was the second overall finisher at the meet, finishing in a time of 18:26.9 in a meet that featured seven division I schools.
Also running well on the women’s side is sophomore Diane Dunn who finished ninth overall at the first meet and 20th overall at the second meet. She was the second fastest UCSD runner at the UC Irvine Invitational, crossing the finish line in a time of 19:07.7. Fellow sophomore Emily McGregor was the fifth fastest UCSD runner in the first meet and the third fastest at the UCI Invite. She was only 1.7 seconds behind Dunn in the second race of the year.
The women’s race is slated to begin at and will be contested over a 6k course laid out on the LehighUniversity campus. The UCSD women are currently ranked No. 11 in Division II
On the men’s side, the trio of seniors, Carl Lostrom, Chris Beetley-Hagler and Luke Sigmon, figure to be the Triton leaders again in Bethlehem on Saturday. Lostrom is coming off a 10th place finish at the UC Irvine Invitational after finishing third a the season-opening three-way meet at home against Point Loma and San Diego Christian. His time of 23:11.9 was 14 seconds faster than the next UCSD finisher at the UCI meet.
Sigmon, who was the top overall individual finisher at the season-opening event, finished second on the team behind Lostrom in Irvine on September 10. Crossing the line third for the Tritons in Irvine was Chris Beetley-Hagler who finished second overall in the first meet on August 27.
The senior triumvirate will lead the 18th-ranked men’s squad into the 8k race that begins at Eastern time on Saturday.
Following the Paul Short Invitational this weekend, Head coach Ted Van Arsdale and his squad will return home to host the UC San Diego Triton Classic on Saturday, October 8. The 6k women’s race will begin at followed by the 8k men’s race at
