Coyotes Too Much For Tritons In Conference Opener, 73-57

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Bryan LeDuc was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and scored 16 points to lead Cal State San Bernardino to a 73-57 victory over UC San Diego in the California Collegiate Athletic Association season opener for both teams Friday night at Coussoulis Arena. Tyler Acevedo scored a game-high 18 points for the Tritons, but it wasn't enough against the defending CCAA Tournament champions.

CSUSB (1-2, 1-0 CCAA) closed the first half on an 8-0 run and never looked back, defeating UCSD (0-3, 0-1 CCAA) for the third time in the last four meetings. The Coyotes ended the Tritons' season with a 76-72 win in the CCAA Tournament Semifinals last March.

LeDuc led three Coyotes in double figures, scoring 16 points on just seven shots in 31 minutes. He also finished with five rebounds. Davon Davis also had a good shooting night, finishing 7-for-11 from the field for 14 points, while Aaron Hill hit 3-of-4 from three-point range en route to 13 points.

Acevedo was the only player to reach double figures for the Tritons, hitting 6-of-16 shots from the floor, including 4-of-9 on threes, for a season-high 18 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.

"I thought we competed and we did a good job on the glass," head coach Chris Carlson said. "At the end of the day, they just made more shots than we did. They shot the ball extremely well and we struggled in the first half. You can't give a team like San Bernardino a lead like we did and expect to come back on their home floor."

The Coyotes scored the first nine points of the game and jumped out to a 15-4 lead as the Tritons missed 12 of their first 14 shots. CSUSB led by 14 before Jake Tarabilda and Acevedo hit back-to-back threes to ignite a 10-2 UCSD run over the next two minutes to bring the Tritons to within six at 21-15.

UCSD trailed by the same margin (32-26) following two free throws from Ryan Wheeler with 2:02 remaining, but the Coyotes scored the next eight points to take a 40-26 advantage into the locker room at the break. Ryan Kinney and Hill hit back-to-back threes for CSUSB, as the home team matched its biggest lead of the first 20 minutes.

Jordan Lawley hit a jumper to open the second half and the Tritons would close to within 42-36 on another triple from Acevedo, but LeDuc scored four straight, Hill knocked down a three, and Davis drilled a jumper to push the lead to 51-36 with 12:45 left to play.

The Coyotes took their biggest lead at 65-45 with less than four minutes remaining and UCSD could get no closer than 13 the rest of the way.

San Bernardino shot just under 57% for the game, connecting on 29-of-51 shots, while UCSD finished at 34%, 20-of-59. Both teams converted six threes and the Tritons, the CCAA's top rebounding team entering Friday's game, held a narrow 33-32 edge on the glass, including 12-4 on the offensive boards.

UCSD will look to bounce back and pick up its first win of the season at Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
