WOMEN'S BASKETBALL STAYS PERFECT WITH THREE-WIN WEEK
The 13th-ranked Women's Basketball team remained undefeated (6-0), collecting three wins last week-one in conference and the final two in their own UCSD Classic Tournament...Coach Charity Elliott's cagers will take a brief holiday respite before returning to host Northwest powers Seattle Pacific (6-1) and Western Washington (7-1) in the Triton Holiday Classic, Dec. 28-29, at RIMAC Arena.
With senior Annette Ilg pouring in a career best 23 points, UCSD reached a season high point total while blasting host Cal State East Bay, 78-61, Tuesday...The win lifted the Tritons to 3-0 in CCAA play...Elliott's club scored the first six points, quickly extended the lead to 20-3 and never trailed, despite letting the Pioneers erase most of the deficit by halftime...The Tritons pushed their advantage to as much as 23 in the second half while easing to the victory...Ilg was 11-of-19 from the floor despite missing all five three-point tries and UCSD had its best night of the year from the field, connecting at a 46.7% clip...Ilg hardly shouldered the whole load...Sophomore Lauren Freidenberg posted a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and point guard Chelsea Carlisle netted 14.
In Friday night's first round of the UCSD Classic tournament, which also served as the Tritons' home opener, three players hit double figures and UCSD flaunted its depth, wearing down visiting Biola, 76-55...The scrappier Tritons beat the taller Eagles, 47-40, on the glass and gobbled up 24 turnovers, taking the lead for good on a Kristen Cabral put back in the game's seventh minute...Carlisle was the top scorer with 16 but a career high 14 from sophomore Daisy Feder (including three treys) and Ilg's 11 provided ample support...Cabral pulled down a team high eight rebounds and newcomer Shanice Howard dished out five assists.
In Saturday's tournament finale, Elliott got 20 points from Carlisle (19 in the first half) as UCSD jackhammered Alaska-Fairbanks, 87-41...The 46-pt. margin was the largest during Elliott's tenure as head coach as UCSD again posted season standards for scoring and field goal marksmanship...Carlisle's 7-of-13 shooting performance pushed the Tritons to a .483 team percentage...Ilg and transfer Tiffany Hunter each chipped in with 12 points and Feder (10) again hit double figures off the bench...Ilg had a nice line that included five boards and four assists as did senior Kristin Cabral with a team high seven rebounds and nine markers...The defense was again solid, holding the Nanooks to just 27.6% shooting, forcing 22 turnovers and winning the rebounding battle, 53-25... Carlisle, Ilg and Feder earned all-tournament recognition.

CARLSON'S CAGERS FACE S.D. CHRISTIAN IN HOME OPENER
After cracking the win column last week, Coach Chris Carlson's Men's Basketball team (1-4/1-2) will try to make it two straight when it closes out 2009 tomorrow afternoon against San Diego Christian...The two teams will tip at 1:00 PM in RIMAC Arena.
Sophomore Christian Hatch made the most of his 29 minutes Tuesday, registering career highs with 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead UCSD to its first win of the year, a resounding, 70-50, triumph at Cal State East Bay...The Tritons hit an even 50% from the field and Hatch's numbers helped earn them a whopping plus-16 in the rebound department...Seniors Tyler Acevedo (16 pts.) and Jordan Lawley (13) both reached double figures and handed out five assists each while junior Casey Ryan continued his solid play with eight points and 10 boards...UCSD had carved out a 12-pt. edge by halftime and never let East Bay get closer than six in the second half.
