LA JOLLA, Calif. - Unable to play two scheduled matches last week because of rain, the UC San Diego women's tennis team are faced with another postponement as Tuesday's road match against Cal State San Bernardino has been pushed to March 3. Now, the Tritons will looks to play its season opener Friday when they host Sonoma State at 2 p.m.
The Tritons, holding streaks of 59 straight wins over California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents and six-consecutive undefeated seasons in conference play, look to continue their league dominance with CCAA action starting this week.
The UCSD roster is especially deep this year with 15 players listed and many athletes competing for the six singles positions. Before last Friday's match with Pomona Pitzer came to a halt, Tritons' head coach Liz LaPlante set out a lineup of Taskeen Bains (No. 1 singles), Natalie Varnay (2), Cindy Dao (3), Katie Mulloy (4), Samantha Yeung (5) and Jacquelyn Davis (6).
The Seawolves of SSU are ranked at No. 44 in the preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll while UCSD sits at No. 19. SSU topped Academy of Art, 8-1, in its 2010 opener last week.
