BONSALL, Calif. - The UC San Diego men's golf team returned to action on Monday, taking part in the Cal State San Marcos Invitational held at the San Luis Rey Downs Golf Course. The Tritons are currently in seventh place out of 12 teams with a two-round total of 603 and trail leader Holy Names University by 21 strokes entering Tuesday's final round.
UCSD opened with a first round score of 304, but came back to shoot a 299 in round two to conclude the day at 27-over par. Junior Keith Okasaki is leading the way at 4-over par, 148 after carding rounds of 75 and 73 to claim a share of 15th place. Okasaki is three strokes in front of teammate Raj Samra, who's two-round total of 151 (76-75) has him in a tie for 23rd place.
Michael Neustadt carded the next-best score for the Tritons, posting an 8-over par, 152 (81-71), while Richard Morris rounded out the scoring for the Tritons, carding a two-round total of 156 (76-80).
Holy Names, which won the rain-shortened event in 2009, is the team leader after two rounds at 6-over par, 582. The Hawks carded rounds of 290 and 292 to take a four-stroke lead over second place Cal Baptist heading into the final round. CBU posted a two-round total of 586 following rounds of 301 and 285. Fellow CCAA members Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State San Bernardino are currently in third and fourth place at 598 (301-297) and 599 (303-296), respectively, while the University of Redlands is in fifth at 600 (300-300), three strokes in front of UCSD.
Cal Baptist's Carl Stjarnfalt sits atop the individual leaderboard after finishing the day at 1-under par. He bounced back with a 66 in round two after a 75 to open the day.
The third and final round at the 6,750-yard, par-72 course will begin on Tuesday morning.
