LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 17 UC San Diego women's tennis team, competing for the first time in nine days, cruised to a 9-0 home victory over Western New Mexico on Wednesday afternoon. For the Tritons, it was the first sweep of 2010 and the team's third-straight victory.
UCSD improves to 6-2 overall this season while WNMU falls to 2-4. Leading the way at the No. 1 singles position, junior Taskeen Bains defeated the Mustangs' Nikolina Vukadin, 6-1, 6-3. Behind Bains were Cindy Dao and Valerie Tang, both securing shutout 6-0, 6-0 wins over their opponents.
Dao has found success through the early stages of the 2010 season, compiling a 5-2 record thus far. Sophomore Samantha Yeung tallied her team-high sixth win with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 position on Wednesday.
In the doubles portion, the Tritons defeated the Mustangs by a combined score of 24-1. Both the No. 2 pair of Jacquelyn Davis and Anita Athavale and the No. 3 duo of Tang and Dao recorded 8-0 shutouts.
UCSD completes its homestand on Saturday when it hosts No. 41 Hawaii Hilo at 11 a.m.
