The top-ranked UC San Diego baseball team needs your help. After posting a stellar regular season record of 45-6 and winning both the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season title and conference tournament championship for the second year in a row, the Tritons will once again be hitting the road for the NCAA Division II West Regional.

The Tritons, who have spent several weeks with a No. 1 national ranking each of the last two seasons, will be heading to the MLB Urban Youth Academy in Compton to begin NCAA Tournament play. The four-team regional will be hosted by Cal State Dominguez Hills, which finished with a regular season record of 37-16 and lost to UCSD in the CCAA Championship game on May 8.

UCSD was the top team in the West Region all season and would have been first in line to host the regional, but the facility at Triton Ballpark fails to meet one of the NCAA's requirements for hosting postseason competition: field lights. Without lights at Triton Ballpark, UCSD has been unable to serve as the regional site for the last two years or host the CCAA Tournament.

In the past year, Triton Ballpark has undergone several renovations and improvements. Fund raising efforts have generated the dollars needed to bring utilities to the field and the site can now support stadium lighting.

The approximate cost of installing lighting at Triton Ballpark is $450,000. Bill Scripps, a member of the UCSD Athletic Board, made a generous donation of $100,000, jump-starting the fund-raising campaign and making the project a reality. Further efforts by the UCSD athletics department have netted another $100,000, bringing the total to nearly half of the goal.

The UC San Diego Athletics Department would like to invite all alumni, family, and friends of Triton Baseball to join us in working towards this goal. Like advancing to the Division II College World Series for the first time in 2009, this is a defining moment in the history of the program.
