Despite being ranked behind CCAA South Division rivals Cal State Dominguez Hills (#4) and Cal State L.A. (#14) in the initial national Division II poll, Coach Brian McManus's Women's Soccer team has been selected as the pre-season choice to win the CCAA in a survey of conference coaches...The Tritons, ranked No. 20 in the national poll, return every starter from last year's squad that went 15-5-2 and lost the NCAA West Regional Final on penalty kicks to Cal State Dominguez Hills...Leading UCSD will be senior midfielder Lisa Bradley, a first team All-American last year, as well as four other All-Region choices---goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong, Annie Wethe, Sarah McTigue and Jessica Wi.

The UCSD Women open the regular season at home, Sept. 2, against Dominican...The Tritons will play a pair of scrimmages this week, hosting Point Loma Tuesday and Mt. San Antonio College Friday...Both kick-off at 7:00 PM.

Third-year Head Coach Jon Pascale's 2010 Men's Soccer roster, released last week, features seven returning starters and 14 lettermen off last fall's squad, including senior defender Jared Kukura, a three-time All-CCAA performer who collected third team All-American recognition last season...He is one of eight seniors on the 2010 roster...That group includes Shane Micheil and David Bakal, the team's top two scorers a year ago... Scoring will be a priority for a team that is coming off a 7-9-4 season in which 18 of the 20 contests were drawn or decided by one goal.

The Tritons will host scrimmages against Point Loma (Tuesday, 4:30 PM) and Cal State San Marcos (Thursday, 7:00 PM) this week before opening the regular season next Tuesday vs. Dominican.

Luyties, who replaced Tom Black after a six-year stint as head coach at Southern Mississippi, is just the fourth women's volleyball coach in UCSD history...His roster includes 11 members of last year's team which went 29-3...Prominent among the missing are CCAA MVP Sylvia Schmidt and fellow All-American, setter Elaine Chen...The returnees include juniors Katie Condon, Hillary Williamson and RS sophomore Julia Freidenberg, who were second, third and fourth in kills behind Schmidt last season, as well as All-American libero Roxanne Brunsting who has been switched to outside hitter.

Veteran Coach Denny Harper opened training camp for the 32nd  time last week and welcomed one of his youngest squads in
recent history...Despite losing four-year senior leaders like Steve Donohoe, Peter Gresham and Sean Roberts, Harper is bullish on the potential of this year's outfit which starts the season 11th in the national rankings.

Seniors Bryce Madsen (37 goals) and Ryan Allred (30) are  the Tritons' top two returning scorers and 2009 freshman standouts Brian Donohoe (10 goals/25 assists) and John Butler (WWPA All-Freshman team) are expected to play expand their impact. Junior David Morton anchors the defense in the cage...UCSD begins the 2010 regular season Sept. 4-5 when it hosts the annual Triton Invitational.

"Overall, our folks came in pretty strong and obviously put in some work over the summer," said Garcia...On the men's side, Garcia said sophomore Matt Lenehan "has taken a very big step from freshman year to where he is now"...The local product was first and second in the two time trials run last week...Senior Jesse Morrill, back from a redshirt season in 2009 "had a real nice opening week," according to Garcia and freshman Chris Steinke from Mira Mesa H.S. made the squad as a walk on.

On the women's side, junior Aaryn Kobayashi appears ready to assume a leadership role after winning both of last week's time trials...Top returner Elena Inouye also figures to be among the top runners, fellow junior Kathryn Turner has shown significant improvement and the freshmen trio of Kamila Foley, Kaitlyn Malloy and Jessica Chang look capable of contributing in their first seasons...The season opens at home Friday, Sept. 3.
