SEASON BEGINS FRIDAY AT HOME FOR NO. 20 WOMEN'S SOCCER
The 20th-ranked Women's Soccer team will make its 2010 debut this week, battling Dominican (Thursday) and Notre Dame de Namur (Saturday) at Triton Soccer Stadium... After finishing 15-5-2 with a PK loss in the NCAA West Regional finals, Coach Brian McManus and Co. are looking to take it further this season with a squad that features just one senior--All-American midfielder Lisa Bradley--but has every starter back from a year ago.
The Tritons, the conference coaches' pre-season choice to win the CCAA, prepared for this week's action with a pair of scrimmages last week...McManus likes the prospects of his club and felt last week's two outings, particularly the second one last Friday, provided good experience against an aggressive opponent..."We're looking good holding the ball," he said, "keeping it and not rushing as much to get forward...We're 'playing' a bit more than we did last season"...He also lauded the play of junior mid-fielder Sara Bolton...After battling through several injuries, Bolton appears back in top form and ready to add depth and versatility to the UCSD midfield.
FIRST TWO IN LA JOLLA THIS WEEK FOR MEN'S SOCCER
An improved Men's Soccer team, led by a motivated group of seven seniors, kicks off its 2010 campaign with a pair of home contests this week...Coach Jon Pascale's side hosts Dominican Thursday night and Notre Dame de Namur two evenings later...The latter figures to be a difficult test against a talented, experienced opponent that is very skilled on the ball...The Tritons won a 2-1 overtime affair at Notre Dame in 2009.
Pascale's club, which went 7-9-4 last fall, have their two top scorers-senior midfielders David Bakal and Shane Micheil-back along with three time All-CCAA defender Jared Kukura and look to have better speed on the wings this time around...Junior Ryan McDowell, redshirt freshman Jesse Brennan and freshman Patrick Cohen are in a dogfight to secure the goalkeeping slot vacated by Peter Akman.
TRITON INVITATIONAL ON TAP THIS WEEKEND FOR MEN'S WATER POLO
A scaled down but still demanding, five-team Triton Invitational will provide the first test for Coach Denny Harper's young 2010 Men's Water Polo team this weekend at Canyonview Pool...The 11th-ranked Tritons will take on conference rivals No. 19 Air Force (9:00 AM) and No. 6 Loyola Marymount (2:15 PM) Saturday before closing up their opening weekend against No. 10 Pacific (10:45 AM) and LaVerne (4:00 PM) Sunday.
Coming off a 14-14 ledger in 2009, Harper can still count on seniors Bryce Madsen (37 goals) and Ryan Allred (30 goals), his top two returning scorers, and junior goalie David Morton who turned aside 296 shots last season, but he will be fielding a largely re-tooled lineup this time around, one that could undergo numerous evolutions between now and the WWPA Championship in November...A pair of sophomores, Brian Donohoe and John Butler, who had impressive freshman campaigns, are being counted on to play larger roles.
Hear comments from Head Coach Denny Harper.

CROSS COUNTRY OPENS AT HOME FRIDAY
Point Loma and Cerritos College will come to town Friday to take on Coach Nate Garcia's Cross Country team on the UCSD campus course...Jumping into the '10 season just two days back from its nine-day high altitude training trek to Mammoth, Garcia's third Triton squad is a young one but has high hopes heading into 2010...The men, who will be going four miles in this fall's opener, will be led by senior Jesse Morrill, who sat out 2009 as a redshirt... Sophomore Matt Lenehan backed up a strong first week of practice with a solid turn in Mammoth and appears ready to move in behind Morrill...Garcia has also been impressed by NorCal freshman Ben Rich.
On the women's side, a wide open roster scenario is still being sorted out...While top returnee Elena Inouye has not yet rounded into her best form, fellow junior Aaryn Kobayashi has taken a significant step forward...Freshman Jessica Chang has had a good camp and figures to be in the mix.
WESTERN OREGON TOURNEY FIRST UP FOR WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
The Ricci Luyties era of UCSD Women's Volleyball commences this Friday as the eighth-ranked Tritons travel to Monmouth, OR for the GNAC Challenge Tournament, hosted by Western Oregon...There, UCSD will face Alaska-Anchorage and Central Washington Friday and take on Western Washington and Western Oregon Saturday... The Tritons were 29-3 a year ago but in addition to breaking in a new head coach, they will have a replace a pair of graduated All-Americans, outside hitter Sylvia Schmidt and setter Elaine Chen.
Luyties doesn't anticipate his first assignment to be an easy one..."In looking at the video we have, we know all of these teams will be tough," he said. "But we're going in expecting to win them all...I've been impressed with the leadership we have, the communication on the court and adaptability to different situations"...The Tritons may have to adapt to not having starting setter Thalia McCann who has been sidelined with a foot injury the last week...If she's not ready to go, back-up Karly Deer could get the call...On the positive side, Luyties has enough quality depth at middle blocker that he's been unable to identify a pair of starters yet and the move of all-conference libero Roxanne Brunsting to outside hitter has been a success so far..."Roxy's done a good job both hitting and blocking," says Luyties, "and Janessa Werhane has stepped in nicely at libero."
