MEN'S WATER POLO PLAYS HOME OPENER THURSDAY
Cutting back after heavy play in the season's opening weeks, Coach Denny Harper's Men's Water Polo team will face just one game this week, Thursday's "Opening Day" clash against Chapman at Canyonview Pool...The contest will be streamed live on ucsdtritons.com...The No. 11 Tritons (5-5) went 2-2 at last weekend's NorCal Tournament in Berkeley.

Harper's young, improving club dropped its NorCal opener, 10-7, Saturday, to No. 6 UC Santa Barbara, a team that had downed UCSD by 10 goals one week earlier...Junior David Morton rejected 14 shots in the cage and seven different players scored goals for the Tritons who fell behind early and were never able recover...The same situation played out in game two, a 10-6 defeat at the hands of No. 15 UC Davis...Senior Ryan Allred found the goal twice and Morton logged 11 more saves, but the Aggies got up early and rode a four-goal third quarter binge to the win.

The Tritons found the win column Sunday morning, knocking off No. 19 Air Force for the second time this season, 11-9...Sophomore Brian Donohoe keyed a balanced offensive attack with three goals as UCSD jumped out to a 3-1 first period edge that it never relinquished...Allred, fellow senior Bryce Madsen and junior transfer Kevin Driscoll all accounted for two goals and Morton stopped seven Falcon tries.

Harper & Co. made it two-for-two against the service academies by dumping No. 16 Navy, 9-6, in the afternoon...The score was even after the first eight minutes, but UCSD outscored the Midshipmen, 6-2, in the middle two quarters and cruised from there...Driscoll netted three goals and Brown two while Morton continued his steady play with 10 saves.

WOMEN'S SOCCER LOOKS FOR ANSWERS AT MONTEREY BAY FRIDAY
Trying to establish some consistency after what's been a topsy-turvy opening three weeks of the season, the No. 25 Women's Soccer team returns to Northern California this weekend to battle Cal State Monterey Bay (1-5/0-4) and San Francisco State (3-2-1/2-2)...After going 0-1-1 on the road last weekend, the Tritons are now 3-2-1 overall, 1-2-1 in CCAA play and an uncharacteristic sixth in the CCAA South Division.

UCSD won the shot (16-14) and corner kick (6-0) numbers Friday in Arcata, CA but a pair of second half goals, less than five minutes apart, lifted host Humboldt State to its first victory of the season, 2-1...Junior Sara McTigue put the Tritons on top, 1-0, at the 10:49 mark, going far post after beating a defender to sweeper Ellen Wilson's lead pass...HSU knotted the game 6:55 into the second half and then scored what turned out to be the game winner on a penalty kick 4:30 later...Keeper Kristin Armstrong had five saves for UCSD.

In rainy conditions Sunday at Sonoma State, the Tritons escaped with a scoreless draw as Armstrong stopped five Seawolf shots en route to her fourth shutout of the year...UCSD took nine corners to seven for the host team but had only 12 shots compared to Sonoma's 16.

BACK TO NORCAL FOR MEN'S SOCCER TEAM
Coach Jon Pascale's Men's Soccer team starts the second half of four straight road tilts this Friday when it takes on Cal State Monterey Bay (0-4-1/0-3-1)...The Tritons (0-3-3/0-2-2) will challenge San Francisco State (2-3-1/0-3-1) two days later...On the heels of 0-1-1 road trip last week, UCSD is now sixth in the CCAA's South Division while Monterey Bay and San Francisco State are tied for fifth in the North Division...Last year, the Tritons played to scoreless ties against both teams in La Jolla.

Senior Jared Kukura's brilliant header gave UCSD a 1-1 tie Friday night at Humboldt State...Things looked grim when the host Lumberjacks tallied on a penalty kick at 75:12...But a minute and 10 seconds later, Kukura found himself in the air on the end of an Adam Zernik free kick and directed it to the far post and in...It was his first goal of the season and fifth of his UCSD career...The Tritons earned advantages in both the shots (19-13) and corner kick (6-1) columns...Freshman Jesse Brennan turned away three shots in the goal.

A goal in the final minute of the first half ignited host Sonoma State, which added a pair of second half goals, to a 3-0 win over the Tritons Sunday...Brennan had five saves for UCSD which was outshot, 13-7.

VOLLEYBALL LOOKS TO ROAD FOR CHANGE IN FORTUNE
Trying to recover from a disastrous week that featured three, five-set losses, the Women's Volleyball team heads back to Northern California to face Chico State (7-3/2-2) and Cal State Stanislaus (5-4/2-2) this weekend...Coach Ricci Luyties' Tritons, now 5-4 on the year and 2-3 in the CCAA, are in the midst of their first three-match losing streak since 2005 and sit ninth in the 12-team CCAA standings...Chico State and Stanislaus are tied for fifth.

The slump started Wednesday night at RIMAC Arena with a 3-2 (27-25, 25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 13-15) loss to then-undefeated Cal State East Bay...Despite playing erratically, the Tritons had every chance to win both of the first two games, including a set point in the first...They also led, 8-5, in the decisive fifth set before errors spelled doom down the stretch.... Continuing her strong play, senior middle blocker Kaitlin Potter led the offense with 18 kills, followed by juniors Katie Condon (17) and Roxanne Brunsting (12)...Libero Janessa Werhane recorded 28 digs and setter Thalia McCann handed out 65 assists.

The script was nearly identical Friday in a 3-2 (27-29, 22-25, 25-18, 25-15, 12-15) loss at Cal State Monterey Bay...The Tritons had control of game one, 24-21, but could not close it out and let a 3-0 fifth set advantage slip away as well...UCSD outhit the Otters (.240-.204) but were beaten soundly in the blocking department (14-4)...Brunsting posted 14 kills, 16 digs and an ace and sophomore Julia Freidenberg chipped in with 12 kills.

It was a different scenario Saturday at San Francisco State...This time, despite outhitting (.183-.119), out-blocking (19-7) and building a comfortable two-set lead, the Tritons again couldn't shut the door, losing , 3-2 (15-25, 26-28, 25-21, 28-26, 15-13) to the host Gators...Adding to the misery, UCSD overcame a five-point deficit to reach match point at 26-25 in game four and had the outcome in its grasp at 11-11 in the fifth before surrendering both sets... Condon, Friedenberg and Potter all had 13 kills, McCann finished with 49 assists, Werhane led with 20 digs and Condon had three of the team's five aces...An injury forced Brunsting to the sidelines for this one...There she joined top hitter Hillary Williamson who missed all three contests during the week.

MINNESOTA RACE ON TAP FOR CROSS COUNTRY
Coach Nate Garcia's Cross Country team flies to Falcon Heights, MN this weekend for Saturday's 25th annual Roy Griak Invitational at...The men will run 8K and the women 6K over the University of Minnesota course...UCSD last competed at this event in 2006...Senior Jesse Morrill, UCSD's top finisher in both of his races this fall, will lead the Triton men while the junior-freshman combo of Aaryn Kobayashi and Jessica Chang figures to be on the front end for the women... Top returnee from last year's squad, junior Elena Inouye is still working back to 100% and won't be on the trip... She's likely to make her 2010 debut at the Triton Classic in two weeks.

Splitting his squad between the Griak Invitational and last weekend's five-team, 55th annual Aztec Invitational, Garcia saw a youth-oriented roster finish first on the men's side and second in the women's division in the latter race Saturday at Balboa Park...The men, capturing five of the top eight slots, out-paced runner-up Point Loma by 18 points... Freshman Ryan Lok, covering the 8K distance in 25:05.8, topped the Tritons with his second place finish...Other scorers were Ben Rich (3rd-28:11.0), Alex Corliss (4th-28:25.0), Justin Wright (6th-29:07.1) and Max Mullender (8th-29:52.3).

On the women's side, UCSD was a solid second but wound up 34 points behind Point Loma's wining total...Freshman Kaity Malloy was first across the line for Garcia's crew, clocking 20:08.2 for the 5K...She was followed home by Maddie Hall (9th-20:29.7) while Kathryn Turner (11th-20:36.2), Samantha Gross (15th-21:05.4) and Ximena Cruz (16th-21:06.8) rounded out the scorers for the Tritons.
