Coach Chris Carlson's Men's Basketball team greets the New Year with three road games in six days, starting with a Monday clash at Cal State East Bay (2-7/0-5) followed by a return trip to Northern California that has weekend stops slated at Chico State (7-3/3-3) and Cal State Stanislaus (2-7/0-5)...UCSD enters the week 7-4 after toppling Sonoma State at home last Thursday night...The Tritons are 2-3 in CCAA play and occupy seventh place in the loop standings...Chico State is sixth while Stanislaus and East Bay are 11th and 12th respectively.

Senior Casey Ryan had a monster game---a career high 28 points, nine rebounds and five assists---in UCSD's, 73-64, victory over Sonoma State...The Tritons, who trailed just once after the opening minutes, also got 19 points and seven boards from Christian Hatch and 16 markers from freshman point guard James McCann...Carlson's crew hit 44.7% from the floor, matched Sonoma on the glass, used a 13-4 run late in the second half to get a comfortable lead and then made 12 of their final 13 free throws to stymie any comeback hopes the Seawolves may have been harboring.

Looking to climb back into the thick of the CCAA race, the Women's Basketball team starts 2011 with three consecutive road outings...Coach Charity Elliott's squad will travel to Cal State East Bay (0-9/0-5) Monday and then play back-to-back at Chico State (9-1/6-0) and Cal State Stanislaus (6-4/4-2) Friday and Saturday...The Tritons are 5-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play coming into the week...Chico State is first in the CCAA standings, Stanislaus is fifth, UCSD sixth and East Bay 11th.

UCSD poked its head over the .500 mark in league action for the first time by running away from visiting Sonoma State, 77-55, last Thursday night...The Tritons accounted for the first eight points of the game, held off several mini-rallies by the Seawolves and then finished strong, burying Sonoma with a 23-5 closing run...Junior guard Chelsea Carlisle hit 12-of-20 from the field (including 6-of-10 treys), chalking up 31 points on the night while also contributing seven assists and five rebounds...Running mates Emily Osga and freshman Megan Perry each registered 12 points, Perry's coming in the first start of her career...Two other freshmen, Elaina White and Erin Dautremont led UCSD on the boards, grabbing six errant shots apiece...The Tritons hit 46.4% as a team and forced 18 Seawolf turnovers, earning a +8 for the night in that department.

Division I Loyola Marymount will furnish the opposition when the Swimming & Diving teams plunge back into action Saturday at Canyonview Pool...Coach Scott McGihon's outfit will make it a weekend doubleheader by taking on Grand Canyon and Mesa State (CA) in a three-way Division II match-up Sunday.

The Tritons come into the winter portion of their schedule with five men and 12 women currently qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships, scheduled for March 9-12 in San Antonio, TX.

Coach Kevin Ring begins his sixth year at the helm of the Men's Volleyball team this weekend as UCSD plays in the UC Santa Barbara Invitational...The Tritons, who were 11-19 in 2010, open up the tourney at 10:00 AM Friday against UCLA, a squad they defeated twice last season...The outcome of the first round matches will determine whether they play UC Santa Barbara or Cal State Northridge that evening...Likewise, Saturday's opponents will depend on Friday's results.

Ring will be relying heavily on senior setter Phil Bannan, a four-year starter, on what will be a relatively inexperienced unit...Middle blocker Calvin Ross and outside hitters Joel Davidson (209 kills) and Carl Eberts (89 kills) saw plenty of playing time a year ago, but the projected starter at opposite, Shane Viega, has seen action in just 10 matches over two years and the remaining two first string positions are still up for grabs...Six-foot-six freshman Sebastian Brady is battling Fred Stahl and Paul Spitsen for the other middle blocker slot and sophomores Chase Frishman and Mike Sierks are fighting it out at libero.

Coach Heidi Runyan's Fencing team steps back into the competitive cauldron in a big way this weekend, hosting the NCAA West Invitational, Saturday at RIMAC Arena...On the list of teams competing are Stanford, Air Force, Northwestern and Florida...The first bouts are at 10:00 AM.

UCSD's weekly online radio show, Triton Talk with host Craig Elsten, returns this Wednesday with men's basketball coach Chris Carlson, women's basketball coach Charity Elliott and senior setter Phil Bannan of the men's volleyball team as scheduled guests...The show will be posted Wednesday afternoon at ucsdtritons.com.

The 11th annual Athletic Department Blood Drive, held in conjunction with the American Red Cross, is slated for Wednesday, Jan. 12, in the RIMAC Green Room...The event, which has been UCSD's largest single day blood drive for several years, is being organized by the Triton Athletes' Council and will run from 7:45 AM to 7:00 PM...Appointments are needed and can be obtained by e-mailing tritons@ucsd.edu ...For more information, call (858) 534-8460.

The Triton Athletes' Council will also be sponsoring the first annual Triton Winter Warm-Up this month...Working with San Diego's Alpha Project for the homeless, the initiative will involve soliciting blankets, jackets and socks from the nearby La Jolla and Del Mar communities as well as the distribution of complimentary tickets to the Triton men's volleyball game on Jan. 21 and basketball doubleheader on Jan. 22...For more information, call (858) 534-8460.
