MEN'S VOLLEYBALL BATTLES TOP TEN TEAMS AT RIMAC ARENA
Coach Kevin Ring's 14th-ranked Men's Volleyball team plays the first two of its final seven matches at home this week, hosting No. 4 Ohio State (16-2), Thursday, and eighth-ranked UCLA (13-9), Saturday, at RIMAC Arena...The Tritons come in 7-15 overall, their last match a thrilling, five-set win over Pepperdine, and 4-12 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play...UCSD is 11th in the MPSF standings, three games away from the last of the eight conference tournament berths which is currently held by UCLA.
GOLF TEAM HOSTS ANNUAL SoCAL INTERCOLLEGIATE
The 61st annual Southern California Intercollegiate Golf Championship, hosted by UC San Diego, starts play today with 36 holes at Mission Viejo Country Club in Orange County...Fourteen teams, nine from outside of California, will be playing in the ultra-competitive tournament which concludes with 18 holes Tuesday...The par 71 layout plays just under 7,000 yds...Coach Mike Wydra's UCSD lineup will consist of Keith Okasaki, Anubhav Rastogi, Lewis Simon, Jacob Williams and David Smith.
MEN'S TENNIS LOOKS TO EXTEND UNBEATEN RUN AT HOME
Riding a UCSD Division II best 13-match winning streak, the undefeated Men's Tennis team returns from finals week with a pair of tough regional home matches this week...Coach Eric Steidlmayer's squad squares off against Sonoma State Friday and Western New Mexico Saturday on UCSD's North Courts...With seven regular season matches remaining, the Tritons appear to be in good position to earn a 12th consecutive NCAA Playoff berth.
FIRST PLACE SOFTBALL READY FOR BIG ROAD TEST AT CHICO STATE
Still hanging onto first place in the CCAA race, Coach Patti Gerckens' Softball team will be coming off a week break when travels to Northern California for a four-game series against Chico State (14-7/11-5)...The No. 20 Tritons are 20-6 overall, 14-5 in conference play and own a half game advantage over second place Sonoma State in the loop standings...Chico State, which had last weekend's scheduled four-game series postponed due to weather, is one game behind the Seawolves in third.
HOME-AND-HOME SERIES WITH POMONA ON TAP FOR BASEBALL
Looking to move up on the CCAA table, Coach Dan O'Brien's ninth-ranked Baseball team tangles with talented Cal Poly Pomona (15-7/9-7) this week, starting with single games Thursday and Friday night at Triton Ballpark and finishing the four-game set with a road doubleheader Saturday...The Tritons are 17-7 overall and 10-6 in league play...They have moved into third place, just three games behind leader Chico State...Cal Poly Pomona is three slots below the Tritons but just a game back in the tightly-jammed pack.
FOGARTY BREAKS OWN MARK IN 200; CAL/NEVADA CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT
Rounding into mid-season form, the Track & Field team faces its sternest competition to date when it travels to Claremont for this weekend's Cal/Nevada Championships which will include most of the top teams from both states...Although the exact make-up of the field in each event won't be known until declarations are made later this week, Coaches Tony Salerno and Darcy Ahner are expecting to have about 40 athletes competing...Those not going to Claremont will participate in Saturday's Point Loma Invitational.
One person who will definitely run at Cal/Nevada and likely be among the favorites is senior sprinter Kelly Fogarty...The Danville native won the 200 (23.73) at last Saturday's Aztec Invitational, breaking the school record for the second time this year in the process...It was an NCAA D-II provisional qualifying mark as were those of Jesse Morrill (2nd/3,000 steeplechase/9:12.17), Caitlin Meagher (5th/400 hurdles/1:01.92) and Nick Howe (5th/javelin/204-1)...Morrill's time was the second best in UCSD history...While the Aztec Invitational was taking place at SDSU, Ka Wai Ng was winning the triple jump (47-5.25) across town at the Point Loma Spring Break Open with the third best leap in school history...Also winning at Point Loma was long jumper Shaun Tu (21-4.75).
WOMEN'S WATER POLO AIMS TO REBOUND IN HAWAII
Having had a week to lick its wounds after a winless performance in the Aztec Invitational, Coach Brad Kreutzkamp's Women's Water Polo team heads to Hawaii where it faces three games, two against ranked opponents...The Tritons open up against No. 11 San Diego State Friday morning and come back later that day to test No. 5 Hawaii...Kreutzkamp's charges will close out the trip to the Islands against WWPA foe Cal State East Bay Saturday.
WU, BARTUZIK HEAD TO NCAA FENCING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Junior Julia Wu (foil) and freshman Nick Bartuzik (sabre) will represent UC San Diego at this week's NCAA Fencing Championships,hosted by Ohio State in Columbus, OH...Coach Heidi Runyan took three fencers to last year's national event where the Tritons finished 17th overall...Bartuzik will compete Thursday and Friday and Wu goes Saturday and Sunday...Each will face a grueling round robin schedule as part of a 24-fencer field in each weapon.
COAST-TO-COAST WEEKEND FOR WOMEN'S CREW
Prepping for next week's San Diego Crew Classic, the Women's Rowing team will split its roster this week with the varsity traveling to the Southeast for the Division II-oriented Florida Duels while the novices will stick closer to home, competing at the Berg Cup in Newport Beach...In Fellsmere, FL, Coach Pattie Pinkerton's varsity eight and varsity four will lock horns with host Florida Tech and Barry, both 2010 NCAA Championship participants, as well as Nova Southeastern and Charleston... UCSD will send a novice eight, novice four and a varsity/lightweight four onto the water in Newport.
