Tritons Battle Nation's Elite on First Day of IRA Championships

CAMDEN, N.J. - The UC San Diego men's crew team opened the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships on Thursday and faced off against the best programs in the nation. After a tough first day of competition, UCSD's varsity eight and junior varsity eight boats will now race in the third-level final on Saturday, while the novice eight will compete in a semifinal Friday, assuring them a top-12 finish.

UCSD's varsity eight raced against highly touted Cal, as well as Wisconsin, Navy, Boston University and Georgetown amidst 25-30 mph wins on Cooper Lake. The Tritons finished sixth with a time of 6:03.24. Cal took first, just two seconds ahead of Wisconsin with a time of 5:28.77. The varsity eight then took part in a repechage against the likes of Syracuse, Yale, Boston University, Dartmouth and Cornell.

"We were on the outside in our first heat and I felt we could have done a better job dealing with the wind conditions," head coach Zach Johnson said. "Of the two repechages we thought some of the tougher competition was placed in our race."

The Tritons clocked a time of 6:00.26 in their second race of the day. It would place them once again in sixth place, 12 seconds behind fifth-place Dartmouth and 24 seconds behind first-place Cornell. The squad will have one final race of the 2010-2011 campaign this Saturday in the third-level final, which will determine who places 13th to 18th out of the 18 total programs at the event.

"They are who we thought they were," continued Johnson. "These are the top crews in the country with top-level athletes and our goal will remain to knock off a few programs."

The junior varsity eight race had a similar outcome. In UCSD's first heat of the day, the Tritons finished fourth, beating out Yale by 43 seconds. They again finished fourth in the repechage, clocking in 20 seconds behind first-place Pennsylvania. In the repechage, the Tritons recorded a time of 6:04.84 and managed to beat Gonzaga by nearly 18 seconds in open water. That same Bulldog crew beat the Tritons previously at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships.

"I felt they did well, although I did feel we could have executed better," added Johnson. "I was not disappointed because I realize this is flat-out a different level of competition."

The junior varsity eight will also compete in the third-level final on Saturday in their last race of the season. UCSD and Gonzaga will be the only two boats in that event with 13th and 14th places on the line out of a total 15 junior varsity eight crews.

The novice eight group achieved the best outcome of Johnson's three boats, claiming at least 12th place out of 17 crews. UCSD recorded a time of 6:03.12 in its first race of the day for a fifth-place finish, while Harvard won that heat with a time of 5:38.79. The Tritons advanced to the first repechage in the afternoon to race against Brown, Stanford, Yale and Gonzaga. UCSD would finish third with a time of 5:49.86, which was just under eight seconds behind the winning Brown crew.

"The freshmen really put it all together," Johnson said. "They executed perfectly and kept to the race plan."

The novice eight will hit the water again on Friday for a semifinal race. UCSD is placed in lane six and will face Cal, Princeton, Brown, Navy and Columbia. The Tritons need a top-three finish to compete in the novice eight grand final on Saturday.

Friday's races will begin at 6:30 a.m. PST with just the UCSD novice eight boat competing. The final day of competition, which is scheduled for between 4:45 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. PST on Saturday, could feature all three Triton boats.

"We will look for more gutsy performances from all of our boats the rest of the way," Johnson concluded.
