LA JOLLA, Calif. - The sixth-ranked UC San Diego women's soccer team lost for the first time this season, 1-0 in overtime to 20th-ranked Cal State L.A. in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday evening at Triton Soccer Field.

Gabbi Segall scored her first goal of the season just over four minutes into the first overtime period to give CSULA the win. Cari Gill sent in a soft cross from the right side that gave the Triton defense some trouble. With UCSD unable to clear it, the ball dropped to Segall, who took it to the left side of the box before finishing a left-footed shot over UCSD goalkeeper Kristin Armstrong's shoulder.

UCSD moves to 8-1-4 overall and 7-1-3 in CCAA play with the loss. CSULA improves to 9-2-2 overall and 7-2-2 CCAA. The win brings CSULA within a single point of UCSD in the CCAA South Division. The Tritons are still on top with 24 points, but the Golden Eagles are right behind with 23.

"As individuals, we need to ask ourselves if we're doing everything we possibly can to win and keep the ball when we're playing," said UCSD head coach Brian McManus. "If you're not willing to put your body in, then you're not going to win much in this game."

Friday's clash marked the third consecutive game the Tritons have failed to score. UCSD is 0-1-2 within that span. The last time the Tritons went three games without scoring was October 31, 2008 - November 7, 2008.

Sarah McTigue had an opportunity to put the Tritons on the board early, as Gabi Hernandez flicked-on a ball for McTigue in the box two minutes in. McTigue volleyed the bouncing ball, but her attempt was high. Alexa Enlow played a dangerous ball into the box that bounced inside the six just before halftime to no avail.

Armstrong was called to task early in the second half. After the Tritons turned the ball over out of a corner kick, Segall collected the ball at the top of her own box before dribbling with it on a sprint into the Tritons' end. With UCSD's Sara Spaventa draped on her back, Segall released a shot just inside the box that Armstrong pushed away with a dive to the left.

Minutes later, Hayley Curtis had the ball bounce to her off a Golden Eagle corner kick. Curtis sent in a floater to the back post, but Hayley Johnson cleared the ball off the line after Armstrong tipped it in flight.

"We need to look at ourselves, including myself, and figure out who we want to be," said UCSD head coach Brian McManus. "I don't know why we've stopped winning tackles and scoring goals."

Courtney Capobianco gave the Tritons another chance to score with five minutes remaining by dribbling the ball down the right side and taking on a defender. Capobianco cut back inside to her left before releasing a shot intended for the back post. The ball buried into a group of defenders before trickling free inside of the box. The ball was cleared before a Triton attacker could pounce on it.

UCSD nearly ended the match without overtime. Johnson took a corner kick with a minute to play and the ball rebounded to Danielle Dixon about 30 yards out. Dixon took a pair of touches before pounding a shot off the crossbar.

UCSD returns to action on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. against Cal State Dominguez Hills at Triton Soccer Field.
