LOS ANGELES - The No. 10 UC San Diego men's water polo team led early but could not hold off No. 11 Loyola Marymount, as the Lions took a 14-10 win over the Tritons in Western Water Polo Association play on Friday afternoon at the Burns Center.

UCSD is now 1-3 against its biggest WWPA rival this season as the Tritons drop to 11-7 overall and 9-3 in WWPA play with their fourth consecutive loss. LMU, who avenged a 9-5 loss to the Tritons on October 2, improves to 11-6 overall and 8-1 in conference play.

The teams traded goals to start the match, but Graham Saber and John Butler scored in succession to give the Tritons a 4-2 lead after the first quarter.  Saber added another to make it 5-2 less than a minute into the second quarter, but the Lions responded with four unanswered goals to make it 6-5 in favor of the Lions with three minutes left. Josh Stiling stopped the bleeding for the Tritons, scoring with 57 seconds left in the quarter to make it 6-6 heading into the half.

Each team scored before the Lions went on to add another four unanswered goals to give LMU an 11-7 lead with seven minutes remaining in the match. Brian Donohoe tallied his second goal of the game on UCSD's next possession to make the deficit three, but the Lions scored three more in a row to take a 14-8 lead with 3:30 left. Danny Lorch and Dane Sequeira registered goals in the waning minutes for the Tritons.

Down by three at 5-2 with 6:17 left in the second quarter, LMU used a 12-3 run the rest of the way to put the Tritons to bed.

David Morton logged six saves in goal for UCSD.

UCSD returns to Canyonview tomorrow, Saturday, October 22, to take on Occidental in a WWPA match-up at 11:00 a.m.
