UCSD increases its winning streak to three matches while moving to 9-8 overall and 8-7 in CCAA play. The Tritons stay mathematically eligible for a berth in the CCAA Championships with the win. UCSD must beat Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday afternoon and hope that Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus lose to their respective Sunday opponents.
SFSU drops to 5-10-2 overall and 4-10-1 in conference competition.
"Cory (Wolfrom) has gotten better as the season has gone on and we knew he was going to be a great contributor. He's been finding his game pretty well," said UCSD head coach Jon Pascale.
The Gators were the first team to get on the board during the first half, as SFSU took advantage of a Triton turnover in UCSD's offensive end . Andrew Chansky picked off Andrew Keimach's ball for Tsuk Haroush, and quickly played it through the middle to Edgar Villagrana. The SFSU striker touched the ball around UCSD's Gavin Lamming to put himself one-on-one with Jesse Brennan. With a defender on his back, Villagrana slotted a shot into the lower right corner to make it 1-0 in the 10th minute.
Villagrana nearly made it 2-0 on a corner kick minutes later, but his volley from inside the six was blocked against the crossbar and the subsequent rebound was stalemated by a group of recovering defenders.
UCSD tied it at 1-1 in the 35th minute as Adam Zernik floated a ball back post for Wolfrom from the right flank. Wolfrom collected the serve and knocked it back to Jordan Valenciano above the penalty box. Valenciano took a pair of touches before using the outside of his right foot to bend the ball away from the keeper into the right side netting.
The game got a little chippy from there and the SFSU bench was given a caution in the 50th minute after the Gators' coach disagreed with a call by the head referee. On the ensuing free kick by the Tritons, Wolfrom floated a ball to the back post, but Alec Arsht was pulled down by an SFSU defender. The referee pointed for a penalty kick and Wolfrom converted to the keeper's left to make it 2-1 UCSD.
"It was good to see Cory step up and take the kick with our usual p.k. taker on the bench at the time. He put his head down and buried it," said Pascale.
The Tritons increased the lead to two 13 minutes later as Zernik took a couple of dangerous dribbles into the penalty box. He played it to the left side for Wolfrom standing all alone about 14 yards out. Wolfrom lifted a soft chip to the top of the six yard box and Evan Walker lept to meet it in mid-air, heading the ball over the goalkeeper's shoulder to make it 3-1.
Arsht capped the match off in the 79th minute, finishing another cross from Wolfrom from the left side to make it 4-1. The goal marked Arsht's fourth of the season and was his third score in three games.
Wolfrom now leads the Tritons with 16 points and eight assists this season. He has recorded 10 points over his last four matches.
"We've got a huge game on Sunday against Cal Poly Pomona. They need to get through us to get to the playoffs and our guys are looking for revenge. It should be a good game," said Pascale.
UCSD will host its final regular season home match on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. against Cal Poly Pomona. CPP fell to Cal State San Bernardino 3-2 on Friday night to keep UCSD's hope for a playoff berth alive.
