LA JOLLA, Calif. - Sophomore midfielder Cory Wolfrom converted a penalty kick in the 39th minute and the Triton defense turned in a stellar performance as the UC San Diego men's soccer team defeated visiting Cal Poly Pomona 1-0 to conclude the regular season on Sunday at Triton Soccer Field.

UCSD ends its season on a four-game winning streak with a 10-8-0 overall record and 9-7-0 conference mark. Heading into Sunday afternoon's match, the Tritons needed to win while Sonoma State and Cal State Stanislaus needed to lose in order to have UCSD clinch the fourth and final seed for the CCAA Championships.

The Tritons held up their end of the bargain and Sonoma State fell to Chico State, 0-1, to give UCSD a glimmer of hope. However, Cal State Stanislaus escaped Arcata with a 1-0 win over Humboldt State to guarantee CSUS the final seed for the CCAA Tournament.

UCSD finishes the year with 27 points in conference competition, fifth-best in the CCAA. Also, the Tritons avenged a 3-0 loss to the Broncos earlier this season on September 18.

Near the end of the first half, Tsuk Haroush cracked a shot to the front post only to have CPP goalkeeper Anthony Iniguez push it out towards the right side of the box. Wolfrom rushed out to retrieve the ball, but was pulled down by a defender inside the box.

Wolfrom stepped up to take the penalty kick and buried it past Iniguez to his right. It marked Wolfrom's second successful penalty kick in as many games.

"It means a lot to beat Pomona. It means a lot to our guys," said UCSD head coach Jon Pascale. "We're a resilient bunch and we showed it today."

After finishing with a goal and three assists on Friday evening, Wolfrom's goal on Sunday gave the Yorba Linda native seven points over the final weekend of play.

UCSD finishes a topsy-turvy season that saw the Tritons go on three-game winning streak, followed by a four-game losing streak, followed by a four-game winning streak to end the season.

Luckily, UCSD will have an opportunity to grow from the last four contests of this season. The Tritons will graduate no seniors from this season's team and the majority of players are expected back in 2012.
