UCSD Continues Hot Start at Mega Duals in Santa Barbara on Saturday
Head coach Heidi Runyan's squad was by the far the team to beat, as UCSD swept both the men's and women's competitions in convincing fashion.
The Tritons posted team victories over UCSB (22-5), UCLA (22-5), UC Irvine (25-2), USC (21-6), Arizona State (18-9) and Claremont (27-0) on the men's side, while the women took care of business as well, turning back UCSB (23-4), UCLA (23-4), UCI (27-0), USC (25-2), Arizona State (16-11) and Claremont (25-2).
UCSD had several standout performances on the day, with Michael Fong and Bryson Abilay leading the way for the men and Casey Gillcrist and Diane Yi turning in outstanding effforts for the women. Fong posted a perfect 12-0 record in foil, while Abilay went 15-1 in sabre. Gillcrist and Yi were the top two performers in epee, both finishing with 12-1 records.
Several other fencers finished with just a single defeat, including Nick Bartuzik (12-1) in sabre and Alex Lavin (6-1) in epee on the men's side and Munira Gesner (9-1) and Lexy Stanley (9-1) in sabre, and Rose Forcier (8-1), Amrit Khalsa (8-1) and Victoria Parra (8-1) in foil on the women's.
The Tritons will return to competition the first week of January with the NCAA West Invitational at Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.
