LA JOLLA, Calif. - Mitchel Anderson scored 14 points and Dwayne Fells finished with 11 as No. 8 Cal Poly Pomona defeated UC San Diego 66-52 on Friday evening at RIMAC Arena.

The Tritons erased an 11-point deficit and tied the game at 42 with 10 minutes remaining, but the Broncos answered with a 15-2 run to put the game away and remain undefeated on the season.

Cal Poly Pomona improves to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play with the win, while UCSD falls to 5-6 on the year and 1-5 in conference play. The Tritons, who earned their first CCAA win of the season with a 72-50 triumph over San Francisco State on Thursday, have now lost five of their last seven games overall.

Anderson finished 6-of-9 from the field to lead all scorers in the game, while Fells finished 5-of-12. Anderson also tallied six rebounds and two assists, while Fells grabbed five boards.

Tyler McGrath bounced back from an off night against SFSU to score 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting for the Tritons, but he didn't have much help as no other player reached double figures for UCSD. Christian Hatch finished with eight points and four rebounds, while James McCann scored seven points and dished out five assists.

"There were definitely some positives to take away from tonight's game, but we didn't shoot it particularly well and we gave up way too many easy baskets on the other end," head coach Chris Carlson said. "Pomona's a very good team and you have to give them credit. We got back in the game and they were able to respond."

UCSD trailed 32-24 just over a minute into the second half, but eight straight points from McGrath brought the Tritons to within two with 17 minutes remaining. A three-pointer by Matt Bailey cut the Broncos' lead down to one at 38-37 three minutes later and another triple from Mike Meza tied the score at 42 all with 10:14 left to play.

It was pretty much all Pomona from that point though as Tyquan Brown answered with a dunk and Fells converted a three-point play to ignite the decisive Bronco run. The visitors would score 13 straight to take a 57-44 lead with 4:11 remaining, with Anderson and Fells accounting for 10 points between them.

The Tritons closed to within 58-50 with 2:50 left, but McGrath missed the mark on a three-point try and Brown and Anderson followed with back-to-back buckets to put the Broncos on top by 12 with just over a minute to play.

UCSD trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, but came back to within five at 27-22 following a layup by McCann with 4:11 left in the period. Pomona led 30-24 at the break.

The Broncos shot 51% from the field overall, converting 22-of-52 shots, while the Tritons connected on just 17-of-45 attempts, 38%. Pomona outscored UCSD 38-18 in the paint and scored 18 points on 13 Triton turnovers.

UCSD will now travel to Northern California to take on Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State January 6-7. Both games are scheduled to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
