LA JOLLA, Calif. - Vaun Lennon led all players with a career-high 25 kills, but the UC San Diego volleyball team suffered a tough 3-2 loss against No. 3 BYU Saturday afternoon at RIMAC Arena.

Scores of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match, which lasted two and a half hours, were 25-21, 40-42, 25-23, 21-25 and 15-10. UCSD fell to 3-9 overall and 1-6 in league play, while BYU improved to 8-3 with a 6-2 mark in the MPSF. The Cougars, who are now 37-0 all-time against the Tritons, defeated UCSD in straight sets Thursday in La Jolla.

It was just the second time in program history that UCSD had won more than one set vs. BYU. Last season in Provo, the Tritons took it to five but ended up falling short.

For the match, the Tritons hit .259 with 78 kills and 36 errors in 162 attacks. UCSD started the match strong but lowered its attack percentage in each set, going from .357 to .283 to .256 to .226 and finally .111 in the fifth and deciding set.

Conversely, BYU upped its attack in four of five sets, culminating with a .533 percentage in the fifth set. Overall, the Cougars had 64 kills and 22 errors in 143 swings, good for a .294 attack. The Tritons managed to keep it close throughout despite getting out-blocked 22.5 to six.

Three other Tritons hit double figure kill totals as Carl Eberts had 22, Fred Stahl had 13 and Sebastian Brady totaled 12. Setter Mike Brunsting recorded a career-high 62 assists and Chase Frishman had a match-best 11 digs.

Lennon's previous career-high for kills was 22, set against NJIT on Jan. 14 of this year.

Robb Stowell had 20 kills for BYU, while Josue Rivera had 15 and Tyler Albertson finished with 10. Stowell also added four service aces, eight digs and nine blocks, three of those solo. Russ Lavaja also totaled nine blocks.

UCSD made 19 errors from the service line.

The Cougars were playing without outside hitter Taylor Sander, who's missed the team's last four matches with a broken hand. Sander has been named the league's player of the week twice already this season.

In the midst of a six-match home stand, UCSD hosts No. 15 Pacific on Friday, Feb. 17 and No. 4 Stanford on Saturday, Feb. 18. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
