No. 17 UCSD Defeated at No. 14 Grand Canyon, 7-2

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The No. 17 UCSD women's tennis team lost at No. 14 Grand Canyon University, 7-2, Saturday. UCSD had two singles wins, but GCU swept the doubles match-ups.

The Tritons dropped to 1-4 on the season and the Antelopes improved their record to to 4-1.

UCSD was coming off a decided 8-1 victory against Dominican on Friday.

Samantha Yeung and Tara Vanooteghem secured the Tritons' only wins of the match on the singles ladder. At No. 3, Yeung took down Frederique Van de Velde 6-4 and 7-6. Vanooteghem battled hard to earn her victory, forcing a tie-breaker against GCU's Cecilia Vergnet. She won the first set 6-0 and lost the second 5-7 before taking an 11-9 win in the tiebreaker.

"We lost, but we really competed hard today," UCSD head coach Liz LaPlante said. "We are showing lots of improvement in doubles, which will really start paying off."

Sunday marks the Tritons' final day in Arizona. They take on Academy of Art at 11 a.m. (PT).
