No. 10 UCSD Takes Down Sonoma State, 7-2
Release: Sunday 02/12/2012

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The 10th-ranked UC San Diego men's tennis team concluded its five-match weekend in Arizona Sunday with a 7-2 win over Sonoma State.

The Tritons went 4-1 during their road trip, earning victories over Metro State, No. 25 BYU-Hawaii, Hawaii Hilo and Sonoma State over three days. The team's only loss came against No. 21 Grand Canyon.

UCSD started Sunday morning's match strong, sweeping the Seawolves in doubles play. At No. 1, Tritons Austin West and Devon Sousa battled Sonoma State's David Hu Hun and Seth Hein for the narrow win, 9-8.

The top two spots on the singles ladder went to the Seawolves, but the Triton bottom four closed out the match in dominant fashion. Max Jiganti, Sam Ling, Kona Luu, and Guy Giubilato beat their respective opponents in singles play, each claiming victories in straight sets.

Despite the loss to Grand Canyon, UCSD head coach Eric Steidlmayer was pleased with the week's results.

"Beating Sonoma State today was a great finish to a long weekend of matches," Steidlmayer said. "Overall, I'm happy with the way the guys played."

UCSD will travel to UC Riverside Thursday, Feb. 16, for a 2 p.m. match against the Highlanders.
