Tritons Take a Set From No. 4 Stanford but Lose in Four

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego was held to a .139 attack percentage while No. 4 Stanford hit .455 as the Tritons were downed, 3-1, in men's volleyball action Saturday at RIMAC Arena.

Scores were 25-17, 24-16, 25-14 and 25-14 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) tilt. UCSD is now 3-11 overall and 1-8 in the league, while Stanford is 11-2 overall and 8-1 in the MPSF.

The Cardinal offense was too much to overcome as it posted an attack percentage of .455 with 60 kills and 15 errors in 99 attacks. Stanford hit north of .500 in two sets including a blistering .588 in the fourth frame.

Conversely, UCSD swung at .139 with just 37 kills to go with 23 errors in 101 swings.

Stanford gave up 17 points on service errors.

Vaun Lennon led the Tritons with 16 kills and Fred Stahl totaled six blocks.

Brad Lawson, the AVCA National Player of the Week, and Brian Cook each finished with a match-high 17 kills. Steven Irvin had 15 kills and Cook and Erik Shoji led the match with eight digs each. The Cardinal, which out-blocked the Tritons 11.5 to nine, got seven stuffs from Gus Ellis.

UCSD hosts a pair of MPSF matches next week as Cal State Northridge is in on Friday, Feb. 24 and Long Beach State visits RIMAC Arena on Saturday, Feb. 25. Both matches start at 7 p.m.
