Game No. 27
No. 1 UC San Diego Tritons (26-0, 20-0) at Humboldt State Lumberjacks (17-7, 13-7)
Wednesday, February 22, 2012 • 5:30 p.m.
Lumberjack Arena (2,000) • Arcata, Calif.
After clinching the 2011-12 California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season title last week, the undefeated and No. 1-ranked UC San Diego women's basketball team will head back to Northern California for the final two games of the regular season. The Tritons will travel to Arcata to take on rival Humboldt State on Wednesday, before squaring off with Sonoma State on Friday in Rohnert Park. As always, both games will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
For the Record
UCSD enters the final week of the season with a flawless overall record of 26-0 and a perfect 20-0 tally in CCAA play after taking down second place Cal State Monterey Bay and seventh place Cal State East Bay over the weekend. The Tritons held off a late rally for a 72-64 win over the Otters on Friday and then took care of business against a much-improved Pioneer squad on Saturday, winning by a final margin of 75-57. UCSD, which has put together the best start in the history of the CCAA this season, has been virtually unbeatable in conference play for over a calendar year, winning 29 of its last 30 games dating back to January of last season.
UCSD Claims Another CCAA Crown
The Tritons clinched the 2011-12 CCAA regular season championship with a gritty performance over Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, outscoring the Otters 7-2 over the game's final three minutes to seal the win. UCSD, which enters the final week of the season with a commanding six-game lead in the conference standings, will be the top seed in the upcoming CCAA Tournament, beginning with a first round home game on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The Tritons have won three of the last four CCAA regular season titles, but are still looking for their first CCAA Tournament crown after falling short the previous four years. UCSD finished third in the league standings with a record of 17-5 in 2010-11.
Best in the West
As you might expect, UCSD was ranked No. 1 in the West in the first NCAA Division II regional rankings that were released last week. One of only two remaining undefeated teams in the country, the Tritons have a firm grip on the top spot with two games to play. No. 8 Alaska Anchorage is currently second in the West, followed by Grand Canyon and Cal State Monterey Bay. If everything stays the same, UCSD will host the eight-team West Regional March 9-12 at RIMAC Arena. For the complete list of rankings, click here.
A Cut Above the Rest
While the standings certainly show that UCSD has been the class of the CCAA in 2011-12, there are several numbers that illustrate just how dominant the Tritons have been in conference play this season. UCSD has a ridiculous scoring margin of +19.3 in league games, winning all but two of its matchups by double digits and posting 11 victories by 20 points or more. The Tritons also lead the league in scoring offense at 79.8 points per game, averaging over 10 more points per game than the league's second-ranked offense, Cal State L.A. (68.4). Furthermore, the Tritons are also the top-ranked team in terms of field goal percentage (.463), three-point field goals made (150), rebounds (41.4) and assists (17.5).
Head coach Charity Elliott's squad continued to get it done on the road last week, defeating Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay by an average of 16 points per game. The Tritons are now a perfect 10-0 in true road games this season, averaging 78.1 points per game on 45.5% shooting in those contests. UCSD, which went 13-0 at home during the regular season, can wrap up the year with an unblemished road record as well with wins over Humboldt State and Sonoma State this week. The Tritons would be the first team in program history to post a perfect record during the regular season.
