IRVINE, Calif. - The No. 19 UC San Diego women's water polo team opened the UC Irvine Invitational with a pair of losses to No. 1 Stanford and No. 9 San Jose State on Saturday at Corona del Mar High School.
The Cardinal topped the Tritons 14-3 before the Spartans took a 15-11 win in the second game.
UCSD moves to 7-5 overall on the year and will play two games on Sunday to finish out the tournament. The Tritons face No. 14 UC Davis tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with the winner advancing to the 13th place game at 4:00 p.m.
Stanford scored early and often in the opening game of the Invite and held the Tritons to just a single goal in each of the first three quarters. Sarah Lizotte, Kirsten Bates and Lindsay Holbrook each scored for UCSD and Allie Taylor stopped eight shots in goal.
Lizotte scored with a man-advantage to bring the Tritons within 3-1 two minutes into the game. The Cardinal accounted for the next three scores of the game, but Bates scored on another man-advantage to make it 6-2 just before the break. Stanford rattled off eight unanswered goals for the next 12:16 before Holbrook scored and made it 13-3 with 1:07 left in the third. The Tritons held the Cardinal to just a single goal in the fourth quarter.
The Tritons fell behind early in their second game of the day, as SJSU jumped out to a 7-1 lead after the first quarter. UCSD rebounded for five goals in the second, but the Spartans scored four of their own to lead 11-6 at the break.
Down 13-6 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Tritons outscored the Spartans 5-2 in the final stanza. Bates led the Tritons with four goals while Brittany Daniels, Hannah Guthman and Lizotte each contributed a pair of scores.
