LA JOLLA, Calif.- The No. 17 UC San Diego women's tennis team fought a tough battle Saturday, falling to Cal State Los Angeles, 5-4. The Tritons won one doubles and three singles matches, coming up just short of overcoming the Golden Eagles.
UCSD is now 3-5 on the season, while CSULA rises to 6-3.
UCSD went on to dominate the bottom of the singles ladder, with Mulloy, Tara Vanooteghem and Krystal Mizuguchi winning at the No. 4, No. 5 and No 6 spots, respectively. Mizuguchi defeated Maria Xavier with resolve, 6-0, 6-1.
"Being down 2-1 after doubles we knew it would be tough to come back, but the girls battled hard," said UCSD head coach Liz LaPlante. "The best match goes to Katie Mulloy, who played her heart out to overcome her opponent in the third set."
The Tritons will face Sonoma State on Saturday, Mar. 3 at Northview Tennis Courts (11 a.m.).
