No. 10 UCSD Routs Whittier, 7-2

LA JOLLA, Calif.- The No. 10 UC San Diego men's tennis team defeated Whittier College Saturday, 7-2, in a commanding performance on both the singles and doubles sides. The Tritons secured wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, and went on to win five of six singles matches.

UCSD improved its record to 9-1, while Whittier fell to 1-1 on the season.

Jason Wall and Kona Luu teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat Whittier's Andy Hansen and Chris Schommer, 8-3. Sam Ling and Junya Yoshida beat Matt Herron and Shogo Shimizu, 8-5, at the No. 3 position. Doubles duo Austin West and Devon Sousa fought hard at No. 1 but could not overcome opponents Julian Seneviratne and Patricio Carregha, falling 9-8 in the match.

The Tritons showed well in singles play as Yoshida was a top performer at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-0, 6-2 over Patricio Carregha. Ling and Luu also had multiple victories, winning at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. 

UCSD will next see action in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships, which take place Mar. 1 - Mar. 4 in La Jolla. The next dual competition for UCSD will be Mar. 6 as Division I Villanova visits Northview Tennis Courts at 2 p.m.
