STANFORD, Calif. - Despite 14 kills from Johl Awerkamp and Carl Eberts, the UC San Diego volleyball team was defeated in four sets by second-ranked Stanford Friday night at Maples Pavilion. Scores were 25-21, 25-15, 22-25 and 25-19.

UCSD fell to 3-14 overall and 1-11 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Stanford improved to 13-3 and 10-2. The two teams met just two weeks prior in La Jolla with the Cardinal winning in four sets on that occasion as well.

The Tritons out-blocked the Cardinal 10 to 7.5, but couldn't keep pace with their opponents' strong hitting. Stanford recorded 62 kills with 16 errors in 113 attack attempts, good for a .407 hitting percentage. UCSD hit .270 with 50 kills and 20 errors in 111 swings.

It was the third consecutive match that Awerkamp led UCSD in kills. He had a career-high 19 against Long Beach State on Feb. 25 and 11 vs. Cal State Northridge on Feb. 24. The junior opposite added three digs and four blocks tonight.

Outside hitter Vaun Lennon tallied 13 kills and hit .348 (13-5-23), also contributing nine digs and two blocks. UCSD's middles accounted for nine blocks as Fred Stahl had five and Sebastian Brady had four. 

Stanford's Brad Lawson put together a solid all-around performance, leading all players with 18 kills and four service aces. He hit .452 (18-4-31) and added five digs, two assists and a block. Steven Irvin totaled 15 kills and hit .500 (15-4-22) and Eric Mochalski chipped in with 12 kills, seven digs and a pair of blocks.  

The last time the Tritons traveled to Maples Pavilion (Feb. 11, 2011) they upset the Cardinal in a sweep, the team's first ever win on that floor. The victory snapped Stanford's 18-match home win streak. 

Friday's contest was the first of a six-match road swing for the Tritons. They play at MPSF opponent Pacific Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
