San Diego Collegiate Challenge Set for Saturday at Triton Stadium

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego will welcome a host of local schools to Triton Stadium Saturday, Mar. 10 for the San Diego Collegiate Track and Field Challenge. Events get underway at noon on campus.

Joining UCSD will be Cal State San Marcos, Cuyamaca College, Palomar College, Point Loma Nazarene, San Diego Mesa College, San Diego State (women only) and Southwestern College.

Throwing and jumping events start at noon with men's hammer, women's javelin, women's long jump and men's pole vault. The track contingent will be in action starting at 1:05 p.m. with the women's 400 meter relay. The men's 1600 meter relay, scheduled for a 4:45 p.m. start, will close out the meet.

UC San Diego was dominant at the 2011 San Diego Collegiate Track and Field Challenge, winning on both the men's and women's sides. 

The Triton women won 10 events and finished with 206 points to defeat eight other schools. San Diego State was second with 138 points, Point Loma was third with 103 and Cal State San Marcos scored 75 points to place fourth.

Kelly Fogarty won the 100 meter (11.83) and 200 meter (23.79) dashes, setting a new school record in the 200.Stephanie LeFever won three events, taking the 100 meter hurdles (14.18), the high jump (5'7.25") and the long jump (18'10.5"). Caitlin Meagher won the 400 meter hurdles (1:02.74), Danielle Thu won the hammer (173'8") and Theresa Richards was victorious in the javelin (128'8"). The Tritons also won the 4x100 (47.03) and 4x400 (3:53.27) relays.

UCSD posted victories in six men's events and tallied a total of 197.5 points to beat out seven other squads. Cuyamaca finished second with 109 points, while Southwestern College took third with 105 and Point Loma was fourth at 100.5.

Ryan Eckert won the shotput (48'8.75"), Zach Nagengast placed first in the discus (149'9") and AB Shaheen was the man to beat in the hammer (180'1"). Also winning individual events for UCSD last season was Roger Huang in the 800 meter (1:58.55) and Ka Wai Ng in the men's triple jump (46'8"). The Tritons also won the 4x400 relay (3:26.00).

UCSD is coming off a strong showing at the annual All-Cal Challenge, hosted by UC Irvine on Mar. 3. Competing against Division I teams UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and UC Riverside, UCSD finished second on the men's side, while the women placed third.

The Tritons won a total of three events on the day. Nick Howe won the javelin (201'8"), Jacqueline Rose was victorious in the 400 meter dash (54.90) and Deyna Roberson took first place in the 400 meter hurdles (63.82). Howe and Rose each registered NCAA provisional marks.
