No. 19 UCSD Falls to No. 2 Barry, 8-1

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 19 UC San Diego women's tennis team was defeated, 8-1, by defending NCAA Division II National Champion Barry University on Thursday at Northview Tennis Courts.

The Tritons secured a singles win, but the undefeated and second-ranked Buccaneers went three for three in doubles and won five singles matches for the victory. UCSD fell to 5-6 on the season, while Barry improved to 9-0.

Jacquelyn Davis earned UCSD's lone win at the No. 6 singles spot, defeating Lizbeth Vargas by scores of 6-4 and 6-3. The top five singles spots all went to the Buccaneers in straight sets.

At No. 1 doubles, Melissa Breisacher and Davis succumed to Linda Fritschken and Caroline Wendling, 8-6. Melinda Chu and Tara Vanooteghem battled hard at No. 2 doubles, falling by a narrow margin of 8-6 to Mona Mansour and Cristina Valladares.

"We lost 8-1 but competed hard, especially in doubles," said Triton head coach Liz LaPlante. "Jacquelyn got a nice win at No. 6 today."

In the middle of a six-match homestand, UCSD will have a day off before hosting Hawai'i Pacific on Saturday at noon.
