LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 16th-ranked UC San Diego men's tennis team cruised by the University of Connecticut Wednesday, winning 7-2 at Northview Tennis Courts in La Jolla.
The Tritons nearly swept on the doubles side and won five singles matches for a decided victory against the NCAA Division I Huskies. Responding to last Saturday's narrow loss against No. 21 Hawai'i Pacific, the Tritons are now 12-2 on the season.
UCSD won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, with pairs Max Jiganti-Devon Sousa and Sam Ling-Mark Meyer victorious by matching margins of 8-6. It was Meyer's first match of the season at No. 3 doubles. UCSD Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer also shuffled the lineup at the No. 1 spot, as Kona Luu and Jason Wall fell in their debut to Scott Warden and Jacob Spreyer, 8-6.
On the singles side, UCSD continued its momentum, winning all matches but one. Each win was in straight sets. Chapman Chan secured the victory at No. 1, beating Scott Warden, 6-3, 6-3, while Junya Yoshida and Jiganti both beat their opponents, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Freshman Guy Giubilato defeated Husky Teddy Margules for his fourth win of the season at the No. 6 position.
Dave Adams secured Connecticut's only singles win of the day, defeating Ling in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 10-2.
The Tritons will return to action Mar. 26 for their last match of a seven-game homestand as they take on UC Santa Cruz at 2 p.m.
