SAN DIEGO - With final exams wrapping up and spring break commencing this weekend, the UC San Diego track and field team had a hand full of student-athletes competing at the 2012 Point Loma Nazarene Collegiate Open on Saturday.

Despite the small contingent, UCSD still managed to come away with several impressive results as the Tritons won a total of nine events and two athletes registered NCAA provisional qualifying marks on the day. The Triton men had a strong performance overall, finishing second out of 10 teams, while UCSD placed sixth in the 10-team women's competition.

"Considering that we didn't have our full squads competing today, we were pleasantly surprised that the men were able to finish second in the overall team scoring," men's head coach Tony Salerno said. "With finals and the start of spring break this week we were more just looking to stay sharp, so to come away with a strong performance like that was really great."

Senior standout Nick Howe was one of six individual event winners on the men's side, placing first in the javelin with a nice toss of 205'10". His throw was more than 32 feet further than the second place competitor's mark and he earned an NCAA provisional qualifier with the performance.

Senior Jeffrey Head won the men's long jump with a leap of 22'10", beating out teammate Quentin McWhorter by over nine inches. His mark ranks No. 7 all-time at UCSD.

Senior Ka Wai Ng also had a strong performance for the jumps squad, winning the triple jump with a mark of 47'11". He bested a field that featured two talented jumpers from Cal State San Marcos.

Junior Ryan Eckert collected a win in the men's shot put with a toss of 50'5.5", while Zach Nagengast was the top competitor in the hammer with a throw of 164'. Senior Dustin Harris posted the other victory for the Triton men, winning the 800 with a final time of 1:55.36.

Freshman Sabrina Pimentel had the biggest performance for UCSD on the women's side, posting a lifetime best time of 2:13.25 to win the 800 by over a full second. Her time was good enough for an NCAA provisional qualifier and ranks No. 3 on the Triton all-time top-10 list.

Senior Erin Langford also cracked the record books, hitting 19'3.25" to finish second in the women's long jump. Her mark was lifetime best and ranks No. 3 all-time at UCSD.

Fellow jumper Chantia Justice placed first in the triple jump at 36'7.75", while senior Jacqueline Rose had another great showing, winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.02.

"Even though we just came off a week of final exams, we still had a lot of great performances today," women's head coach Darcy Ahner said. "We had fewer women competing today, but we still had plenty of solid results. Sabrina's PR in the 800 was definitely the highlight."

Several Tritons will return to the Point Loma campus next weekend to compete in the PLNU Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, March 31. The rest of the squad will take part in the Cal/Nevada Collegiate Championships in Claremont on Saturday and Sunday.
