Westmont Edges No. 19 UCSD, 5-4

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -  The 19th-ranked UC San Diego men's tennis team fell to Westmont College by a narrow 5-4 margin in Santa Barbara Friday.

The Tritons captured three singles wins and a victory at No. 3 doubles, but it was not enough to conquer the Warriors. UCSD fell to 12-6 with its fourth consecutive loss while Westmont improved to 6-5.

Max Jiganti and Sam Ling secured UCSD's lone win at No. 3 doubles, defeating Lukas Zielen and Josh Barnard, 8-5. At No. 1, Devon Sousa and Austin West fell to Bryan Cox and Rodrigo Schaefer, 8-6. At the No. 2 spot, Kona Luu and Jason Wall were defeated by Tim Goranson and John Bertram, 8-3.

On the singles side, UCSD secured three wins at the bottom of the ladder. Jiganti defeated Bertram at No. 4, 6-1, 6-2. Luu topped Zielen, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 5 and Ling finished the trio of wins for the Tritons, defeating Barnard, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.

At No. 1 singles, UCSD's Chapman Chan fell to Cox in three sets, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2.

The Tritons will next compete at the White Sands Tennis Championships in Pensacola, Florida, April 5-7.
