SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's crew team finished within 25 seconds of defending national champion and race victor Western Washington in a dual meet on Monday. The Vikings swept the Tritons in both races, as the two crews were coming off a taxing weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic.

"All of our boats raced really well, we were very pleased with their times and performances," said UCSD head coach Pattie Pinkerton.

UCSD's varsity eight boat finished behind Western Washington with a time of 7:04, on mark with the team's personal goals at this point in the season. The Tritons were trailing Western Washington by 15 seconds when the boat's rudder caught seaweed, and Western Washington pulled away to finish in 6:39.94.

"We were where we needed to be and are excited about our hull speed," Pinkerton said. "Our goals have been to break the seven-minute mark and put two halves of the race together, and we are doing that."

The other race of the day was a varsity four matchup, where UCSD pitted two shells against the Vikings' one. Western Washington crossed the finish line at 7:38.80, with the UCSD "A" boat coming in at 8:00.4 and the UCSD "B" boat trailing at 8:28.6.

"Western Washington is the crew to beat," Pinkerton said. "We had a good row and were on target."

Four Triton seniors celebrated senior day this weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic, with today's race being their last as a Triton in their home waters of Mission Bay. Graduating seniors Carolyn Belak, Katie Holstein, Natassia Peterson and Ellen Umeda were honored for their contributions to UCSD women's crew. In their home farewell races today, Belak (fourth year) rowed second seat for varsity four "A", Holstein (third year) rowed second seat for varsity four "B", Umeda (third year) rowed third seat for varsity four "B" and Peterson (second year) rowed third seat for varsity eight.

The Tritons will have three weeks to prepare for their next competition at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Championships on April 21-22 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
