No. 2 West Florida Defeats No. 19 UCSD, 7-2

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The second-ranked West Florida Argos beat visiting No. 19 UC San Diego, 7-2, Thursday on their home courts on the opening day of the White Sands Invitational.

The Tritons, which fell to 12-7 with their fifth straight loss, surrendered two losses in doubles and fell in five singles matches. With the win, the Argos improved their record to 17-2. 

On the doubles side, Max Jiganti and Sam Ling secured UCSD's only win, defeating Michael Lue and Domenico Sano, 9-7, at No. 3. Devon Sousa and Austin West fell to Bruno Savi and Kevin Ducros at No. 1, 8-6, while Kona Luu and Jason Wall lost to Andrey Pozhidaev and Leandro Ferreira, 8-4, at the No. 2 position.

West Florida's Ducros, Savi and Pozhidaev all rank in the top 10 in the South Region.

Jiganti went on to capture UCSD's lone win on the singles ladder as well, defeating Elio Latela in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 at No. 4. Jiganti is now 16-3 in singles matches this season. The rest of the Tritons fell in straight sets to their opponents. At No. 1, Ducros defeat Chapman Chan, 6-2, 6-1.

UCSD is set to face St. Edwards in day two of the tournament on Friday. The match is scheduled for a 9 a.m. PT start time.
