Both Ends of Doubleheader vs. Sonoma State Go to UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - UC San Diego won both ends of a doubleheader against league-leading Sonoma State Friday at Triton Ballpark, taking the opener, 10-8, in come from behind fashion and narrowly missing a shutout in game two, winning 4-1 behind a solid pitching effort from Trevor Scott.

The first game saw UCSD come back from a 6-2 deficit to score 10 or more runs for the eighth time this season. In the nightcap, Scott was brilliant, striking out a career-high 10 batters in five scoreless innings of work.

With the wins, the Tritons are now 20-15 overall and 18-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). The Seawolves are 18-13 on the year and hanging on to first place in the league by a thread over UCSD at 16-7. UC San Diego can take over the CCAA's top spot with a win in Saturday's fourth and final game of the series vs. Sonoma.

The Tritons entered the week tied for second place in the CCAA with Chico State. They now own the slot outright as the Wildcats were swept in a doubleheader at Cal State San Bernardino Friday.

Danny Susdorf scored four times in game one and joined Richard Seigel and Garrett Tuck with two RBI each. Susdorf led off the game with his fifth triple of the season, Seigel smashed his team-leading fourth home run and Tuck was 3-for-3 at the plate. Scott Lisked doubled twice and scored a pair of runs.

Junior reliever Richard Kilbury picked up the first win of his season and second of his career as he gave up no runs and no hits over the seventh and eighth innings. Tony York finished the game to earn his seventh save.

SSU scored four unearned runs in the first inning and led 6-2 after three and a half. UCSD tied it up with four runs in the bottom of the third. Liske had an RBI double and Susdorf knocked in two runs with a single. The Seawolves committed three errors in the inning.

The Tritons took a 7-6 lead with a single run in the fifth, but the Seawolves quickly tied it with a run in the sixth. Susdorf scored on a Tuck sacrifice fly in the seventh, giving UCSD the lead for good. Tuck drove in another run as the Tritons tacked on two insurance scores in the eighth.

In game two, Scott (3-3) allowed just two hits. With no outs and two runners on base in the fourth inning, the freshman left-hander struck out three consecutive batters to end the threat. Scott's previous high for Ks was four, which he totaled on three occasions this season.

Susdorf again had two hits while Seigel and Brett Levy both doubled. Spencer Frazier and Sam Michaels each had a RBI.

After three and a half scoreless innings, the Tritons broke it open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Five hits and two Sonoma State errors led to the runs.

UCSD had two outs in the top of the seventh and final inning, but the Seawolves were able to thwart the shutout by scoring a run on a wild pitch.

Saturday's final game is slated for an 11 a.m. first pitch. UCSD students are admitted free with a valid ID. The game will be covered by live video as well as live stats.
