LA JOLLA, Calif. - Danny Susdorf and Spencer Frazier each had two hits and Ryan Goodbrand tossed six strong innings to guide the surging UC San Diego baseball team to a 3-1 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday evening at Triton Ballpark.
The Tritons scored three runs in the second inning and limited the Toros to a single run in the fourth to improve to 22-15 overall and 20-9 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSUDH fell to 10-23 overall and 6-19 in league play.
Goodbrand (7-0) gave up the one run on four hits en route to his seventh win of the season. He struck out three, walked none and retired the side in order in the first, second and fifth innings. Relievers Elias Tuma and Tony York combined to pitch three scoreless innings of relief as UCSD claimed the series opener with CSUDH and won its season-high fifth straight game in the process.
York came on in the ninth inning and struck out two batters, earning his ninth save of the season. His total ranks third on UCSD's single season list.
At the plate, six Tritons accounted for the team's eight hits. Susdorf and Brett Levy doubled and Scott Liske tripled, his second three-bagger in his last five games. Susdorf and Richard Seigel each had an RBI, while Frazier, Levy and Sam Michaels scored one run each.
Drew Rodela went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Sako Chapjian doubled and scored a run for CSUDH. Carlos Avila tripled. Starter Sean Wardour (2-4) threw all eight innings, striking out two and walking three.
Two of UCSD's three runs were unearned. Levy led off the bottom of the second inning by doubling down the left field line and moved to third when the next batter grounded out. An infield error allowed Michaels to reach first and advance to second while also letting Levy score the first run of the game. Frazier then singled, moving Michaels to third, before Susdorf doubled back up the middle to score Michaels, giving UCSD a 2-0 lead. Seigel picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to left that plated Frazier.
With one out in the top of the fourth inning, Chapjian doubled down the left field line and came around to score when Rodela singled to center in the next at-bat.
UCSD left 10 runners on base while CSUDH stranded five.
UC San Diego, which took over first place in the CCAA with a four-game sweep of Sonoma State last week, has won 12 of its last 14 games. The last place Toros have lost four straight and six of their last eight.
The two teams continue the four-game series Friday with a 6 p.m. contest at Triton Ballpark. Dominguez Hills will host a doubleheader in Carson on Saturday, with the first tilt scheduled for a noon start.
