SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 19 UC San Diego women's water polo team downed Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay, 9-3 and 12-8 respectively, in Western Water Polo Association play at The Bronco on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Aquatic Center.
UCSD improves to 6-2 in WWPA competition this season and 17-12 overall.
Leah Gonzales and Sarah Lizotte scored twice against the Pioneers as UCSD shutout CSUEB, 3-0, in the third quarter to pull away. Jessica Tran, Kirsten Bates, Emily McPhee, Rachel Brooks and Natalie Peng also scored. Tala Majaj made six saves in the cage.
Bates led all scorers with four goals in the afternoon affair against the Otters. UCSD jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Melissa Bartow, Katherine Biehle and Lizotte scored twice against CSUMB. Tran and Kat Andersen added goals.
UCSD faces Cal State San Bernardino at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. The Tritons end the tournament against CSU Bakersfield at 1:45 p.m.
