Williams shot rounds of 71 and 70 on Monday to claim a share of fourth place at 3-under par, 141 and keep the Tritons in the hunt for their first CCAA title. UCSD currently stands at +3, 579 after carding rounds of 288 and 291 on the par-72, 6,741-yard Hunter Ranch layout.
The Tritons, who were in second place after the opening round, currently have a one-shot lead over fifth place Cal State Monterey Bay and trail third place Cal State San Bernardino by just four strokes heading into the third and final round on Tuesday.
No. 7 Chico State is currently leading the field at 10-under par, 566 after firing rounds of 285 of 281 on Monday. The Wildcats have a two-stroke edge over second place Cal State Stanislaus, which wrapped up the day at -8, 568 (289-279). Cal State San Bernardino is third at -1, 575 (291-284).
Williams was definitely the catalyst for the Tritons, finishing below par in back-to-back rounds for the first time in his career. The Fontana native is currently tied with two other players for fourth, just two strokes back of individual leaders Rob Damschen of Cal State Stanislaus and Eric Frazzetta of Chico State.
Damschen carded rounds of 70 and 69 on Monday, while Frazzetta followed an opening round 71 with a 68 in Round 2.
Williams currently has a four-shot lead over teammate Jay Lim, who wrapped up the day at +1, 145 following rounds of 72 and 73. Lim's score was good enough for a share of 18th place overall. Lewis Simon had the next-best day for UCSD at +3, 147 (72-75), followed Marc Herrmann at +4, 148 (73-75) and Austin Shuxiao at +9, 153 (80-73).
Simon is tied for 23rd place, while Herrmann earned a share of 26th and Shuxiao is sitting in 35th.
The third and final round will begin Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. The Tritons are scheduled to tee off starting at 8:10.
