LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - The UC San Diego men's golf team is currently in 19th place after the opening round of the NCAA Division II Central/West Regional at the Wigwam Golf Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

The Tritons carded an opening round 310 on Monday, struggling to find their form on the formidable Wigwam Gold Course. At +22, UCSD is already 37 strokes off the leader's pace heading into the second round on Tuesday.

Head coach Mike Wydra's group is just one shot behind 18th place St. Martin's University and three strokes back of 17th place Colorado Mesa. California Collegiate Athletic Association Champion Chico State is leading the field at -15 following a 273 on Monday, while Cal State Stanislaus and Colorado School of Mines are tied for second at -5, 283.

The top five teams and the top two individuals not with a team will advance to the NCAA Championship Finals May 15-19, at The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.

Freshman Marc Herrmann had the best opening round for the Tritons, posting a 75 on Monday. His score was good enough for a share of 42nd place individually. Herrmann has a one shot advantage over teammates Lewis Simon and Jay Lim, who are currently tied for 52nd place at +4, 76.

Sophomore Jacob Williams and freshman Austin Shuxiao shot identical 83s are tied for 105th place.

Chico State's Kyle Souza is atop the individual leaderboard following a 65 in the opening round, followed by Jim Knous of Colorado School or Mines in second place with a 66 and teammate Eric Frazzetta with a 67.

The Tritons, who are coming off a third place finish at the CCAA Championships in Paso Robles two weeks ago, are making their first regional appearance as a team since 2007.

The second round of the 54-hole Central/West Regional is scheduled to get underway Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. The Wigwam Resort's par-72 Gold Course plays at 7,430 yards.
