No. 24 UCSD Keeps NCAA Championship Hope Alive
Release: Friday 05/18/2012
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Maria Sykes laced a one-out RBI single in the top of the 11th inning to score Mya Romero as the No. 24 UC San Diego softball team survived its elimination game against St. Joseph's College (Ind.), 2-1, at the NCAA Division II Softball Championship on Friday afternoon at Knights Field.

UCSD (43-22) advances to face No. 2 Central Oklahoma (45-7) at 2:30 PDT on Friday. The contest will most likely be postponed until later in the day due to the length of the UCSD-SJC contest.

The Tritons must defeat the Bronchos this evening to stay alive in the tournament. If UCSD prevails, the teams will collide on Saturday morning in an elimination game, with the victor advancing to Saturday afternoon's national championship game.

Sykes accounted for the Tritons' first RBI of the game as well, driving in Kirsten Willmon with the bases loaded in the first inning.

SJC answered back in the top of the first, putting runners on second and third with one out on an error by the Triton infield. Shawn Hoskins flew out, but Brittnie Boerma beat out a single on a groundball to the right side to allow Amy Varner to score.

Camille Gaito (31-11) pitched all 11 innings for the Tritons, delivering 157 total pitches, 111 for strikes. The senior right hander struck out three and walked two while giving up seven hits.

SJC ends the season at 40-21 overall.
