Dixon-Word Earns CRCA All-America Accolades, Three Tritons Receive Scholar Athlete Recognition

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Alyssa Dixon-Word was named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division II Pocock All-America First Team, it was announced last week. Dixon-Word also earned scholar athlete honors, along with teammates Ellen Umeda and Charlene Cheung.

The Tritons' only returning varsity eight rower in 2011-12, Dixon-Word led the young UC San Diego team from the bow seat to set the standard for training and racing. The Oroville native led the squad on the ergometer, ranking 20th all-time in the UCSD record book and topped the Triton leaderboard in the power-to-weight category.

As a sophomore in 2010-11, Dixon-Word collected CRCA All-America Second Team honors.

Throughout her career, Dixon-Word has consistently extended her leadership beyond the boathouse, serving as vice chair on the Triton Athletic Council and excelling in the classroom. In addition to making the All-America First Team, Dixon-Word was also tabbed a CRCA 2012 National Scholar Athlete for the second consecutive year with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher as a biology major.

Sophomore Cheung and senior Umeda joined Dixon-Word on the 2012 CRCA Scholar Athlete Team. Cheung, an Alhambra native, is a mechanical engineering major, while Sunnyvale's Umeda studies ecology, biology and evolution. Umeda also earned scholar athlete honors last year.

To be eligible for CRCA All-America honors, the student athlete must meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, must participate in at least 75 percent of all races during the current season in the varsity boat and must be nominated by her institution. In addition, the head coach of the institution must be a member in good standing of the CRCA.

For scholar athlete eligibility, the student athlete must meet all eligibility rules as defined by her institution, must be in her second, third or fourth year of eligibility, must have participated in 75 percent of the season's races and must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher for her career.
