In early May, Donohoe was one of 10 student-athletes from the West Coast selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Team, rendering him eligible for Academic All-America distinction. He was one of 15 individuals named to the Academic All-America First Team, joining standouts from Alabama, Tennessee, Ohio State, Penn State and Stanford.

Donohoe was key to UCSD's success this season, leading the Tritons to their first Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) title since 2006 and a fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships. He recorded 30 goals, 35 assists and 28 steals on the season, earning All-WWPA Second Team, All-WWPA Tournament Team, ACWPC Division II All-America and All-NCAA Tournament Second Team honors for his contributions. 

In the classroom, the Upland native has a 3.96 cumulative GPA as a history major at UCSD. He collected a host of other academic hardware in 2011-12, including ACWPC All-Academic accolades and the prestigious Elite 89 Award, which is given to the participating player with the highest GPA at the NCAA Championships.

To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
