Women's Volleyball Ranked 17th in AVCA Preseason Poll

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The UC San Diego women's volleyball team owned the No. 17 spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll that was released Tuesday afternoon.

UCSD closed out its 2011 campaign with a 22-6 overall record and placed third in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) with a 17-5 mark. The Tritons advanced to NCAA postseason play for the fifth consecutive season. They were ranked 24th in the preseason, climbed to as high as 10th and finished at 16th.

Concordia-St. Paul, which has won the last five national championships, topped the poll and received all 32 first-place votes. Tampa was second with CCAA member Cal State San Bernardino third. The Coyotes brought a perfect 31-0 record into the 2011 national title match, where they fell to the Golden Bears of Concordia-St. Paul.

Sonoma State, which qualified for its fourth straight NCAA West Regional in 2011, was the third CCAA squad to make the poll, coming in at No. 24.

Three other teams that UCSD will face in 2012 were mentioned in the poll, including Metro State (13th), Seattle Pacific (receiving votes) and Western Washington (receiving votes).

The Tritons begin their season at the Grand Canyon University Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz., Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Also competing will be the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, Grand Canyon and Metro State.
